A Green Pocket in the City

Tucked along E. Johnson St. in Madison, Wisconsin, Emerson East Park might be small (just 0.78 acres), but it represents a vital breathing space for the surrounding neighborhood. This mini urban oasis wasn't always known by its current name - locals previously called it Pennsylvania Park until June 2019, when the Board of Park Commissioners officially renamed it to better reflect its place in the heart of the Emerson East community.

Art That Speaks Volumes

The park got a creative boost in 2018 with the addition of a thoughtful public art installation called "The People's Pronouns." Wisconsin artist Ray Chi created three eye-catching sculptures that spell out "WE," "US" and "OUR" using perforated, powder-coated steel and warm hardwood.

These meaningful pieces stretch across the long, narrow parkway at the corner of East Johnson and First streets, creating a subtle yet welcoming gateway into the neighborhood. The installation adds both visual interest and a sense of community identity to the space.

Don't let its compact footprint fool you - Emerson East Park plays an outsized role in neighborhood life. In an area where private outdoor space comes at a premium, this little green patch offers residents a place to breathe, gather, and connect with nature without leaving the block.
