About the Location
Scenic Lakeside Setting
Law Park is a 4.66-acre community park located along the northern shore of Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin.
The park offers scenic views of Lake Monona and serves as a popular spot for water activities.
Water Recreation
The park is home to the Mad-City Ski Team, which performs free water ski shows nearly every Sunday from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. The ski team's performances take place right next to the Monona Terrace.
Law Park features a boat launch, though parking for the launch is very limited with no trailer parking available. The park also has a designated canoe and kayak launch site.
Historical Background
The park's history is intertwined with Madison's urban development. In the early 20th century, the area was filled in with various materials, including garbage and construction debris, to extend the shoreline and create new land.
This process, completed by 1950, extended the shoreline 250-300 feet into Lake Monona. The park is named after James Law, who served as Madison's mayor in the 1930s and was instrumental in this lakeshore extension project.
Visitor Information
Visitors should note that alcohol is prohibited in the park unless a permit is obtained through the Parks Administrative Office.
