About the Location
History
Found on Madison's south side at 2101 Fisher Street, Penn Park spans 7.35 acres of neighborhood greenspace. The park has been a community cornerstone since 1953, when the city purchased the land from Clifford Penn. Over the decades, it's become an important green space for the surrounding neighborhood.
Facilities and Activities
Kids and adults alike can enjoy the playground area that anchors the park. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the basketball courts, football field, and multipurpose field that accommodate various activities all year long.
The newest addition to Penn Park arrived in spring 2024 with Madison's first futsal mini-pitch court. This dedicated space brings the fast-paced soccer variant - typically played with 5 players per team on a hard surface - to the south side community.
Community Connections
Penn Park isn't just a place for casual recreation - it's home base for the Southside Raiders Football Club and their spirited Southside Raiders Cheerleading Squad. Its location directly across from the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County creates a natural youth activity hub, strengthening community bonds across generations.
Events and Gatherings
The park hosts several notable community events throughout the year. The annual Juneteenth celebration stands out as a particularly significant gathering, drawing people from across Madison to commemorate this important holiday.
Year-round, you can find live music performances and community festivals bringing neighbors together in this shared space. The park also represents a venue for athletic events, including the Gospel 5K/10K run that winds through the neighborhood.
Amenities
Planning a family reunion or birthday celebration? The large shelter offers an excellent spot for gatherings large and small. Practical amenities include restroom facilities and a concession area that operates during events.
The generous open fields provide plenty of space for impromptu games of catch, picnics, or simply lounging with a good book. The layout accommodates both large community events and casual afternoon visits.
Renovations and Improvements
Recent years have seen notable renovations enhancing the park experience. Improvements to the shelter and concession/restroom building, parking lot upgrades, and other site enhancements have created a more welcoming environment for south side residents and visitors alike.
Park Rules
Note that Penn Park is designated alcohol-free, however you can obtain permits for alcohol consumption through the Parks Administrative Office if needed.
The parking lot has a 3-hour limit at all times and closes during winter. During popular events, parking can fill up quickly, so you might want to consider biking, walking, or public transportation as alternatives.
