About the Location

Recreational Facilities

Spread across 71.42 acres on Madison's east side, Sycamore Park is a spacious retreat with something for everyone. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of two full-sized soccer fields, multiple basketball courts, and a volleyball court where local pickup games regularly unfold.

If you're bringing the kids along, you'll come across thoughtfully designed playground equipment with separate areas for the little ones and older children. There's also plenty of open field space excellent for flying kites, tossing frisbees, or simply lounging on a blanket with a good book.

Dog Exercise Area

A highlight of Sycamore Park is its sprawling 20-acre off-leash dog exercise area. Built atop a former landfill site (talk about a transformation!), this elevated spot offers some of the best views in Madison - on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the capital building in the distance.

Local dog owners gather here year-round, forming a community of canine enthusiasts. If your furry friend is on the smaller side, you'll appreciate the dedicated small dog section where the little dogs can play without being overwhelmed. Walking paths circle the area with strategically placed benches for when you need a moment to rest while Fido continues exploring.

Just a heads up - there's not much shade up here, however the hilltop breeze helps on hot days. While your pup won't find a swimming spot, the sheer size of the area means it rarely feels crowded, even during peak weekend hours.

Trails and Pathways

New in 2024, outdoor enthusiasts can explore approximately 1.5 miles of natural surface, bike-optimized singletrack trail. These paths are open to cyclists as well as hikers, walkers, and snowshoers in winter months.

The trails offer varied terrain with natural stone chips, native soil, stone, and wooden features, ranging from beginner-friendly paths to moderately challenging sections. For those preferring a smoother journey, paved paths connect the park's different areas, making it easy to navigate between activities.

Amenities and Natural Areas

Need a break from the sun? Head to the sun shelter on the park's south side near Nakoosa Trail. While picnic facilities are somewhat limited, you can find at least one picnic table nestled under a large shade tree near the playground - fantastic for a family lunch break.

The park balances recreational spaces with several natural, non-mowed areas. Some sections are undergoing prairie restoration as part of a collaborative effort between parks, engineering, and dedicated volunteers - it's beautiful watching these native ecosystems slowly return.

Note that while restrooms are available, they're not abundant, so plan accordingly. Also, spring thaws or heavy rains can leave parts of the park (especially the dog area) a bit muddy, so appropriate footwear is recommended during wet seasons.

Master Plan

Looking ahead, Sycamore Park's Master Plan (approved May 2023) outlines exciting developments to enhance the park experience in coming years. For now, the park is particularly scenic during sunrise or sunset when light sweeps across the open spaces, offering nice views of Madison's natural beauty.
