About the Location

A Pocket of History in Milwaukee

Positioned in Milwaukee's urban landscape, Burns Commons might be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in historical significance. Dating back to 1847, it's among the oldest green spaces in the city. The park sits on a charming triangular plot bordered by Franklin Place, Prospect Avenue, and Ogden Avenue, with Knapp Street cutting through to create two distinct sections.

This little green space has gone through a few identity changes over the years. First known as First Ward Park, then as Franklin Square, it finally found its permanent name in honor of the cherished Scottish poet Robert Burns, whose statue found its home in the southern section in 1909.

What You'll Find There

The Robert Burns statue is a park decoration and a piece of cultural heritage. This bronze artwork is actually a replica of one standing in Kilmarnock, Scotland, gifted by James Anderson Bryden, a Scottish immigrant who wanted to bring a piece of his homeland to Milwaukee.

Wander into the northern section and you'll discover landscaped areas with trees, open lawn, and winding walkways. The modern sculpture "Cleopatra's Wedge" by artist Beverly Pepper stands as a bold centerpiece, creating an interesting contrast to the park's historical elements.

Stone benches scattered throughout the commons invite you to sit and take a moment for yourself among the greenery. The brick pathways add to the park's character, however, be aware that some sections can be a bit uneven underfoot.

A Touch of Nature in the City

Even with downtown Milwaukee surrounding it, Burns Commons offers a surprising connection to nature. Mature trees create welcome pools of shade during those hot summer days and lend the space a peaceful atmosphere year-round.

If you're into birdwatching, keep your eyes peeled for Cooper's hawks that sometimes perch in the trees after venturing from the nearby Oak Leaf Trail - a small but delightful wildlife encounter in the middle of the city.

A Green Space in the City

For the surrounding community, Burns Commons offers a green space amid the concrete landscape - a place to relax, reflect, or simply enjoy being outdoors.

As part of the Milwaukee County Parks system, this space has been part of the city for more than 170 years. Its East Side location is convenient for nearby residents and workers looking for a moment of calm amid urban bustle.

Getting There

Reaching Burns Commons is a breeze thanks to The Hop, Milwaukee's streetcar system, which stops right at the park. This free transit option makes the commons not just a place to visit, but also a convenient connection point as you explore the city.
