About City Walk BHAM

Urban Transformation

What was once just empty space under the newly-replaced I-59/20 downtown viaduct in Birmingham, Alabama has become a vibrant 31-acre linear park stretching 10 city blocks from 15th to 25th Street North. City Walk BHAM threads a mile-long path through the heart of the city, connecting Birmingham's downtown business district with the northern neighborhoods.

Completed just in time for the 2022 World Games, the project bridges a divide that the original interstate construction created decades ago.

Design and Heritage

What we really like about City Walk BHAM is how it acknowledges Birmingham's industrial roots. You'll notice Corten steel elements within the park - that's the material that intentionally develops that rusty, weathered look over time. It's a great nod to the city's deep history in the steel industry.

The park doesn't shy away from important history, either. The Civil Rights Story Zone along 16th Street North offers meaningful gathering spaces where school groups and tourists can learn about Birmingham's significant role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Features and Amenities

The park breaks down into several distinct zones, each with its own personality. The Destination Playground is particularly clever - its equipment and landscaping represent Alabama's five physiographic regions: Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Alabama Ridge and Valley, Cumberland Plateau, and Highland Rim. Kids of different ages and abilities will find plenty to keep them entertained here.

For the active types, there's no shortage of options. The Barkery dog park (which does require proof of vaccination and a small fee), pickleball courts, a skate park, and even a roller rink offer diverse recreation possibilities. Keep in mind their hours might change with the seasons. You'll also find a basketball court and fitness equipment if you're looking to break a sweat.

Need a place for community gathering? The park's amphitheater hosts concerts and events, while multiple picnic areas scattered throughout make perfect spots to relax with friends or enjoy a quick lunch.

Atmosphere and Experience

There's something uniquely urban about hanging out beneath an interstate, and City Walk BHAM embraces this reality. Yes, you'll hear traffic noise from above, but the designers have worked with this unusual space rather than against it. At night, the thoughtful lighting transforms the environment completely.

The park creates excellent walking connections between cultural landmarks like the art museum, the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, and downtown hotels. Clean restrooms are available, and the paved paths throughout make it ideal for a casual stroll, morning jog, or walking your four-legged friend.

Visitor Information

If you need help finding your way around, the Welcome Center can point you in the right direction (though hours may vary). Year-round, the park hosts community walks and even private events like birthday parties, with staff available to help coordinate.

On warm days, the splash pad becomes a popular spot for families looking to cool off.

Management and Future

While the park has successfully drawn visitors and accomplished many of its initial goals, it does face some real-world challenges regarding funding and upkeep. With monthly operating costs between $115,000 and $120,000, conversations continue between local officials and the Alabama Department of Transportation about ensuring the park's long-term financial sustainability.
