About the Location

Recreation and Sports Facilities

Nestled in Birmingham, Alabama, Heardmont Park spreads across 74 picturesque acres, offering a little something for everyone who loves the outdoors. Managed by Shelby County Parks and Recreation, this space is popular for both organized sports and casual recreation.

The Oak Mountain High School Football Stadium functions as the park's centerpiece, complete with a rubberized track and modern turf surface that stays playable even when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. Local football games and track meets unfold here regularly, with plenty of seating for cheering fans.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the impressive lineup of facilities: seven baseball fields, two softball fields, and three soccer fields make this a go-to spot for leagues and tournaments all year long. The park also includes four lighted tennis courts and four pickleball courts. If you're into pickleball, morning and evening sessions often attract friendly pickup games - a wonderful way to meet fellow players.

Trails and Natural Features

If you prefer something more laid-back, the park's well-maintained walking trails wind alongside Cahaba Valley Creek, offering a peaceful escape. These concrete paths are accessible to most and remain relatively flat, with gentle rises only where bridges cross the creek.

The creek itself adds a refreshing natural element to your park experience. Several bridges and low water crossings give you different vantage points to enjoy the waterway. On warmer days, don't be surprised to see people cooling off with a quick splash in the creek - a simple but effective remedy for those hot Alabama afternoons.

Evening walks are equally enjoyable thanks to the lighted trails. And if you're worried about finding your way around the expansive grounds, you'll find helpful maps posted within the park.

Playground and Recreation Areas

Near the senior center, you'll find a children's playground with swings, slides, and climbing equipment designed for 5-12 year-olds.

Just beside the playground, children enjoy a collection of small boulders that function as a natural climbing area. Standing three feet tall or less, these rocks offer an extra dimension of adventure that complements the traditional playground equipment.

When it's time for a snack or meal, you'll discover plenty of shaded picnic tables across the park, particularly along the creek where the scenery enhances every bite. For larger gatherings, a covered pavilion provides shelter from sun or unexpected showers.

Additional Amenities

The park's senior center hosts various programs and activities for older adults. The center features a garden tended by seniors and can be rented for special events.

Four-legged family members are welcome too - the park is dog-friendly, though your pup will need to stay on leash. You'll come across waste disposal bags and trash cans conveniently placed to help keep the grounds pristine.

When nature calls (the other kind), clean restrooms are available at several locations throughout the park, including handicap-accessible facilities near the senior center. Ample parking lots serve different areas of the grounds, making it easy to start your park adventure close to your destination of choice.

All year long, Heardmont Park hosts community gatherings, including an annual Christmas tree lighting that brings neighbors together. Whether you're playing basketball, taking an evening walk, or relaxing by the creek, Heardmont Park combines natural spaces with useful amenities.
