About Butler Green in Huntsville

Butler Green is a public park located in Huntsville, Alabama, situated within the Campus No. 805 complex. The park was established to preserve the legacy of the former S.R. Butler High School, which once occupied the site. Named after Samuel Riley Butler, a prominent Huntsville educator from 1890 to 1930, Butler Green serves as a connecting point between the old and new buildings in the area.

The park features a recreational lawn that spans the space between Yellowhammer Brewery and Straight to Ale Brewery, two popular establishments within Campus No. 805. This urban green space was created by the City of Huntsville to recapture and preserve the athletic fields that were once part of the school grounds.

Butler Green is designed to be a multi-functional outdoor area, providing a venue for various activities and events. It serves as a gathering place for the community and visitors to Campus No. 805, offering a blend of open space and proximity to entertainment venues.

In 2016, Huntsville's Historic Preservation Consultant recognized the 13-acre Campus No. 805 project, which includes Butler Green, for its preservation and adaptive reuse of an important community space.
