About Cavalry Hill Community Center in Huntsville

Cavalry Hill Park is a public recreational area located in Huntsville, Alabama. The park is part of Youth Athletic Zone 3 in the city. Spanning 6.91 acres, Cavalry Hill Park offers a variety of sports facilities and amenities for community use.

The park has historical significance, as it is named after the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers who were encamped in the area following their service in the Spanish-American War. These African American troops, commanded by Army legend "Black Jack" Pershing, were initially sent to Huntsville's Monte Sano to recuperate from wounds and diseases brought back from the war. After an incident between black and white soldiers, the Buffalo Soldiers were moved to what became known as 10th Cavalry Hill, from which the park derives its name.
