About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked into the Old Seward/Oceanview neighborhood of Anchorage, Hamilton Park spans a cozy 1.69 acres. This intimate space, named after the adjacent subdivision, became part of the community when it was purchased back in August 1974.
The park started its life as a modest neighborhood green space, made possible through Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) dollars.
A Bit of History
By 1986, the park needed some TLC, particularly to solve drainage problems that had developed. Before its recent makeover, Hamilton Park kept things simple with a toddler play area, basketball court, a few picnic tables, and an asphalt trail connecting neighbors to their local green space.
Fresh New Look
The winds of change came in 2019 when local voters gave a thumbs-up to a $200,000 Municipal Park Bond earmarked for Hamilton Park improvements. After gathering community input and careful planning, construction crews broke ground in summer 2020.
By October 2020, the renovation was complete, breathing new life into the playground and enhancing several features to better serve everyone who visits.
What You'll Find Today
Now the park has modern play equipment, including a custom-designed "Ninja Course" for kids aged 5-12. The little ones haven't been forgotten either, with improvements to the toddler play area for children 0-5 years old. Safety surfacing throughout the playground has been upgraded to meet current standards.
The project also gave the existing asphalt trail a much-needed refresh and added a new ADA access connection, making the park more welcoming for everyone.
Why It Matters
Hamilton Park might not be the biggest green space in Anchorage, but it plays an outsized role in the Old Seward/Oceanview neighborhoods. It's where kids laugh, neighbors chat, and the community comes together to enjoy a little glimpse of the outdoors right in their own backyard.
