About the Location

Natural Features

Tucked into the heart of Anchorage, Alaska, Margaret Eagan Sullivan Park - also known as Westchester Lagoon - offers a little slice of wilderness amid the urban landscape. Sprawling across 89.3 acres, this park feels like a breath of fresh air in the middle of city life.

The park's centerpiece is an 11-acre lagoon that represents a gathering place for both people and wildlife. If you're into birdwatching, you're in for a treat - especially during summer and fall when ducks and geese make the lagoon their temporary home. Keep your eyes peeled for moose too; they're regular visitors year-round. On clear days, the views include mountains creating a dramatic backdrop. You can even spot the famous Sleeping Lady mountain formation from certain vantage points in the park.

Recreation Opportunities

This is truly a park for all seasons. In warmer months, the lagoon transforms into a playground for small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Come winter, the same water freezes over to create a natural ice skating venue where the city regularly hosts bonfires to keep skaters warm. Just know that while maintained, the ice might not be as smooth as an indoor rink - it's nature, after all.

One of the park's greatest assets is its trail system. Sitting at the junction of two of Anchorage's favorite pathways - the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and the Chester Creek Trail - it's a gateway to miles of exploration. Regardless of whether you're walking, running, biking in summer, or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, these interconnected trails offer endless possibilities. During snowy months, parts of the park are groomed specifically for cross-country skiing, making it truly a year-round destination.

Amenities

A 2013 renovation gave the park's playground a serious upgrade. Now it features multiple zones tailored to different age groups - from toddlers to pre-teens - making it one of the best places in Anchorage for kids to play. There's also a fitness area with equipment that's well-suited for older kids and adults looking to squeeze in a body-weight workout. These exercise stations have become quite popular among regular visitors.

The park comes well-equipped with all the essentials: parking (though it can get crowded during peak times), a shelter, permanent restrooms, and additional portable toilets when needed. Picnic areas with tables and benches are scattered throughout, alongside plenty of open grassy spaces that are ideal for lounging or impromptu gatherings.

During summer, you can grab a quick bite from a snack stand selling hot dogs and other treats. There's even café-style seating on a deck outside where you can relax and refuel.

Wildlife and Scenery

The lagoon is a magnet for wildlife, particularly birds. Several small islands dotting the water provide safe nesting spots, making this an ideal location for bird enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape offers beautiful mountain panoramas on clear days, while the connection to the coastal trail provides easy access to waterfront views.

Four-legged family members are welcome too! The park is dog-friendly, with many people bringing their leashed companions to enjoy the walking paths and open areas, but there isn't a designated off-leash section.

History

This park has roots stretching back to the 1960s when it was developed as part of an urban renewal project. What was once a ski area with a rope tow on Romig Hill has evolved dramatically over the decades. The creation of the park involved building a dike, an underpass, and a tide gate, as well as forming islands in the lagoon to provide sanctuary for nesting birds. Today, it's a multi-use space that benefits both the community and local wildlife.
