About the Location

A Glimpse into the Past

Sunset Park sits on what was once the Government Hill Elementary School before the devastating 1964 earthquake claimed it, with the remains finally cleared away in the late 1970s. The space was officially designated as parkland in 1968, with the Government Hill Community Council giving it the name we know today.

There's a certain poignancy to this place - many former students still carry cherished memories of their school days here from the early '60s until the earthquake hit. Interestingly, you won't find any commemorative plaque or marker telling this story when you visit.

The Views That Make It Special

Perched on a bluff just north of Downtown Anchorage, this little park rewards you with scenic views that make the trip worthwhile. It's mostly open green space, with a sloped section that transforms into a lively sledding hill when winter blankets the area in snow.

What You'll Find There

Kids between 5-12 years old have their own domain here - a playground equipped with all the essentials for outdoor fun. The most popular feature? A slide that's particularly popular with the younger crowd.

Planning to stay a while? The park offers tables and a shelter for picnics, fantastic for everything from casual family lunches to neighborhood get-togethers.

During summer visits, you'll appreciate the practical addition of a portable toilet - sometimes it's the simple conveniences that matter most.

Why It Matters

Though not the largest green space in Anchorage, Sunset Park is important to the Government Hill neighborhood. It offers space for outdoor activities and community events, contributing to the neighborhood's sense of community.
