Signal Butte Park
About Signal Butte Park
A Modern Oasis for Play and Recreation
Positioned in Mesa, Arizona, Signal Butte Park is a relatively new addition to the city's green spaces, having opened its doors in January 2020. This 76.7-acre park features a thoughtful design with various amenities for visitors of all ages.
Not Your Average Playground
What we really like about this park is the distinctive playground. Designed by Landscape Structures Inc, this isn't your typical swings-and-slides setup. The geometric playscape features Hedra and Hedra Towers for the 5-12 crowd, while the little ones (toddlers and preschoolers) can enjoy the Hedra Scout area.
The whole structure connects in this cool three-dimensional matrix that seems to spark creativity in kids. Local children have nicknamed it the "spaceship park" or "parkour park" - its futuristic vibe and obstacle-course feel encourage imaginative play.
The giant slide is a definite highlight, cleverly designed with light holes so it's never too dark inside (goodbye, slide anxiety!). Parents will appreciate that it naturally slows down at the bottom for safer landings. Just a heads-up: most of the equipment is metal, which can heat up during Arizona summers, so timing your visits accordingly might be smart.
Getting Your Steps In
Need to stretch your legs? The park features a 1.5-mile lighted asphalt walking path that circles the entire park. Regardless of whether you're walking, jogging, or biking, this well-maintained trail provides a great circuit for your daily exercise.
If structured paths aren't your thing, there are plenty of open grassy areas ideal for impromptu games of frisbee, picnics, or just lounging with a good book.
Cooling Off and Comfort
Arizona heat is no joke, which makes the park's small splash pad with misters a welcome feature. It runs from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily and won't cost you a penny. While not massive, it's just right for kids who need to cool down during play.
Within the park, you'll discover several ramadas equipped with picnic tables and benches, great for gatherings or a shaded lunch break. Some even include grills for those who want to cook up something tasty. Planning a larger get-together? You can reserve certain ramadas through the City of Mesa.
The park doesn't skimp on practicalities either - the restroom facilities are clean, modern, and well-maintained. Water fountains are available for both humans and four-legged friends, with special dog fountains scattered throughout.
Bring Your Furry Friends
Dog owners will be pleased to know that leashed pets are welcome here. Dog waste stations are conveniently placed around the park, making cleanup easy. While the walking paths are great for daily dog walks, some visitors mention that the trails might feel a bit confined if you have larger, more energetic dogs.
Nature's Neighbors
It's worth knowing that the park shares its space with some local wildlife. Javelinas and coyotes have been spotted, particularly in the desert areas. When visiting, keep an eye on small children and pets, especially during dawn and dusk hours.
Temporary Changes
Currently, the west trail and ramada 3 are closed as the Signal Butte Water Treatment Plant undergoes expansion. This closure is expected to continue until early 2026.
