About the Location
Natural Oasis
At the heart of Cortez Park sits a 3-acre lake with depths reaching 14 feet. If you're an urban angler (or just someone who wants to try their hand at fishing), you're in luck - the lake is regularly stocked with fish and features a fishing pier excellent for casting your line. Taking a stroll around the water, you'll likely spot various waterfowl making themselves at home; ducks and geese are common residents that add a touch of wilderness to this city sanctuary.
Get Moving
The park offers both lighted and unlighted sports areas for various activities. Shoot some hoops at the basketball courts, organize a friendly game at the softball fields, or rally a team for volleyball. When you're ready to refuel, scattered picnic areas with grills await, and ramadas provide welcome shade during those scorching Phoenix afternoons.
Kids won't be bored for a second with two separate playgrounds tailored to different age groups. The little ones (2-5 years) have their own space, while older children (5-12 years) can tackle more challenging play equipment - all designed with safety in mind.
Make a Splash
During the warmer months, the park's public swimming pool becomes a refreshing retreat. It's not just your basic rectangle of water - this pool comes equipped with water slides and diving boards, plus a shallow section where younger swimmers can splash around safely. If you or your kids want to improve those swimming skills, lessons are available throughout summer. The best part? It's incredibly affordable: adults pay around $3, while kids get in for just $1.
Fresh Updates
The park keeps getting better. Recent work includes a newly repaired and re-striped north parking lot with improved accessible parking spaces. They've also added extra lighting on the north side and around that parking area, which means safer evening visits and extended hours to enjoy the space.
Community Hub
This 30.3-acre green space serves many purposes for Phoenix residents. Whether you're fishing at the lake, enjoying a family picnic, participating in sports, or simply taking a peaceful walk, Cortez Park provides a nice escape from the city surroundings.
You'll come across this community treasure on W. Dunlap Avenue in Phoenix, open daily from 6AM to 10PM - plenty of time to explore all it has to offer.
