About the Location
Urban Oasis
Tucked right in the heart of downtown Phoenix, Margaret T. Hance Park spreads across 32 acres of welcome green space. Named after Phoenix's first female mayor (girl power!), this urban retreat sits cleverly atop the Deck Park Tunnel that carries Interstate 10 traffic below your feet.
Since opening in 1992, the park has evolved into a community gathering spot where city life slows down a bit. With sprawling grassy areas and winding pathways, it's where you can catch your breath amid the city's constant motion.
Cultural Corners
One of the coolest things about Hance Park is how it brings global culture right to Phoenix. The Japanese Friendship Garden is a genuine slice of zen with its traditional landscaping and peaceful koi ponds that make you forget you're in the desert Southwest.
You'll also find the Irish Cultural Center and the McClelland Irish Library here, adding some European flair to your park experience. Right next door, the Burton Barr Central Library and Phoenix Center for the Arts complement the park's cultural vibe with plenty of educational and creative opportunities.

What to Do
The park offers something for everyone. The modern playground area features quirky animal-themed structures that are popular with children. The fox and owl climbing features are a hit, and that white sand sandbox? Total magnet for little ones.
When Arizona brings the heat, the splash pad near the playground provides welcome relief. If you're feeling more active, check out the volleyball courts or stroll along the walking trails. Dog parents, take note: there are separate dog parks for your small and large four-legged friends.
The open grassy spaces are great for impromptu picnics or just lounging with a good book. Several sheltered ramadas dot the landscape for when you need some shade, but you might need to reserve some of them ahead of time.
Community Hub
Hance Park hosts various events throughout the year. The spacious grounds accommodate concerts, cultural celebrations, food festivals, and holiday gatherings.
Its central location and open layout make it suitable for larger events. From Super Bowl watch parties to music festivals, the park hosts many of Phoenix's public gatherings.
Growing Better
The park is getting better with age, thanks to thoughtful revitalization efforts in recent years. The City of Phoenix has partnered with local organizations on a master plan that's breathing new life into this cherished space.
You can already see the results in the redesigned playground and enhanced walking paths. These improvements show the ongoing commitment to making Hance Park an even more vibrant part of downtown Phoenix life.
