About the Location

Historic Development

Established in 1934, Encanto Park was conceived by William G. Hartranft, president of the first Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board. He envisioned creating a large urban park similar in scale to Balboa Park in San Diego and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

The park has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. In 1982, the south side was updated with new game courts replacing the original archery range, and additional parking and play equipment were added.

Reconstruction of the north side began in 1986, which included revamping the lagoon and channel systems, building new restrooms and a boathouse, and adding area lights and play equipment.

Natural Features

This 222-acre public park features a picturesque landscape with meandering lagoons, canals, and islands that serve as a waterfowl refuge. Visitors can observe a variety of unusual trees and shrubs throughout the park.

A 7.5-acre lagoon, approximately 6 feet deep, provides opportunities for fishing and boating.

Recreation Facilities

Encanto Park includes two golf courses designed by William P. Bell, a notable golf course designer and founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.

One of the park's notable features is Enchanted Island, a children's amusement park located on one of the islands. It offers various rides and attractions, including a historic carousel, pedal boats, and carnival games, primarily catering to children aged 1 to 10.

Architecture and Recognition

The park contains several buildings designed by the local architecture firm of Lescher and Mahoney, showcasing Spanish Colonial Revival and Art Moderne architectural styles.

Encanto Park has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride and is part of the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its central location and diverse amenities make it a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking recreation and relaxation in an urban oasis.
