Campbell Park
About Campbell Park
A Slice of Tempe History
Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Tempe, Arizona lies Campbell Park - an 8-acre green haven that became the city's 43rd park when it opened its gates in November 1994.
The park bears the name of Rudy Campbell, who made history as Tempe's first directly elected mayor. Campbell's story is pretty remarkable - born in Oklahoma, he moved to Arizona with his family as migrant farm workers, served his country in World War II, and then returned to build a career in banking. Before taking the mayoral office in 1966, he served as a councilman from 1958 to 1962.
What You'll Find Here
Campbell Park features a nice blend of open spaces and recreational options common to neighborhood parks. The sprawling green lawns create a peaceful setting for anything from a quiet afternoon with a book to a spontaneous game of frisbee.
Families with kids will appreciate the playground equipment, where little ones can burn off energy and make new friends. Many children enjoy the excavator-like digger toy in the playground area.
The park's walking paths wind through the grounds, suitable for a morning stroll or a casual evening walk. The park includes a soccer field, softball field, and volleyball court for sports activities.
Good to Know Before You Go
Campbell Park is primarily used by locals who can walk over from nearby homes. Note that there isn't dedicated vehicle parking available, so plan accordingly if you're coming from further away.
There are several picnic areas and shelters scattered across the park for meals. The park also has a grilling area available for outdoor cooking.
Bringing Your Four-Legged Friends
Your furry companions are welcome to join you at Campbell Park, making it a nice spot for dog walks. Just a friendly heads-up: the far end of the park sometimes has spiked bur weeds in the grass that could hurt your pet's paws, so you might want to steer clear of those areas during certain times of the year.
