Joyce Park
About Joyce Park
A Touch of Tempe History
Tucked away at the intersection of Hermosa Drive and Laguna Drive in Tempe, Joyce Park spans 4.6 acres of neighborhood greenspace. The park bears the name of Fred Joyce (1881-1967), a key figure in early Tempe who arrived in 1911 fresh from the Missouri School of Mines.
Joyce wasn't just passing through - he helped shape the city, serving on the city council from 1922-26 and leaving his mark on various civic organizations. When Tempe faced a housing crunch in 1924, Joyce stepped up by developing the Park Tract subdivision, which makes up much of today's Maple Ash neighborhood.
Beyond his civic contributions, Joyce wore many hats throughout his career, from mining industry work to selling policies as an insurance agent for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York.
A Tranquil Community Haven
With its canopy of mature trees, Joyce Park offers a peaceful retreat from the Arizona heat. The generous shade creates a wonderful setting for walking your dog, finding a quiet moment of meditation, or simply enjoying some fresh air.
Kids gravitate toward the covered playground equipped with slides, swings, a jungle gym, see-saws, and even a car-shaped structure that sparks imaginative play. Picnic tables are scattered within the grounds, including one nestled under a gazebo - ideal for family lunches or weekend gatherings.
The open grassy areas invite impromptu games of frisbee, morning yoga, or whatever activity suits your mood. You might occasionally find local church groups holding community events here, drawn by the park's laid-back atmosphere.
What to Know Before You Go
Note that Joyce Park doesn't have public restrooms or a dedicated parking lot, but street parking is readily available along the park's perimeter.
If you're bringing your four-legged friend (who must stay leashed), you'll appreciate the pet waste bag stations positioned within the park. There's even a thoughtful touch - a pet drinking fountain located near the human drinking fountain by the playground.
Looking Ahead
Exciting changes are coming in 2025, as Tempe has announced plans to refresh Joyce Park with upgrades to the playground equipment, expanded rubber surfacing for safer play, and the addition of an accessible picnic table location.
These thoughtful improvements will make this neighborhood retreat even more welcoming for everyone who visits.
