Historic Urban Oasis

Himmel Park has been a community gathering spot since 1935, when Alvina Himmel Edmonson sold the land to the city with just one request: that it be named after her parents. A simple wish that created a lasting legacy - and 24.3 acres of green space in central Tucson, Arizona, that serves as the backyard for the Sam Hughes neighborhood.

Natural Environment

Himmel Park provides a green space in the urban environment. The grassy areas feature mature trees that provide shade on hot Arizona days. A wide, tree-lined path cuts through the heart of the park - meant for a casual stroll or your morning jog. Those looking for something more accessible can check out the newer paved walking path that runs along the south and west edges.

Look up and visitors might spot some of the park's feathered residents. Vermilion flycatchers flash their bright red plumage, while gila woodpeckers tap away at tree trunks. Hummingbirds, northern cardinals, and lesser goldfinches add to this little urban ecosystem. And on clear days, the Catalina Mountains provide a stunning backdrop that reminds visitors that yes, they're definitely in Tucson.

Recreational Facilities

For those looking to stay active, Himmel offers several options. The park features four soccer fields where weekend warriors battle it out, plus several baseball/softball fields for America's favorite pastime. Eight lighted tennis courts keep the action going after sunset, but they're popular enough that you might have to wait your turn (and pay a small fee). The pickleball courts have also been drawing crowds as the sport gains momentum.

There's something special about the 25-yard swimming pool - built back in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration, it's a piece of living history where you can cool off during the sweltering summer months. The attentive lifeguards keep things safe, and there's always a dedicated lap lane available even during the busiest free swim times.

Rounding out the fitness options are the basketball courts and outdoor fitness equipment that let you work up a sweat under the Arizona sky.

Family-Friendly Areas

Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at Himmel's multiple playgrounds, designed with different age groups in mind. One playground feature has achieved legendary status among local kids - a giant metal slide that's delighted generations of Tucsonans. Parents and guardians can keep an eye on the action from nearby benches and tables while kids play on the wood chip surfaces.

On the north side of the park sits a small hill that locals have nicknamed "Hippie Hill." This natural rise doubles as an amphitheater for community events and performances. Sunday mornings bring a special vibe when community dance events take over the space, filling it with music and movement.

Book lovers will appreciate the Himmel Park Branch Library nestled in the northeast corner. Built in 1961 as Tucson Public Library's very first branch, it includes a cozy children's area, a study room, and a meeting space - all adding to the park's community-centered feel.

Scattered around the grounds are picnic areas with tables where you can enjoy an outdoor meal. Some spots offer covered areas for when the sun is at its strongest, and there are grilling areas available if you're in the mood for a proper cookout.
