About the Location
A Peaceful Neighborhood Retreat
Located in the Terra del Sol neighborhood of Tucson, Claire Weeks Terra del Sol Park (also known simply as Tierra del Sol Park) is a quiet 2.3-acre green space that offers a retreat from the urban surroundings. Located in Ward 2, this compact green space has become a favorite among locals seeking a quiet, clean, and safe place to unwind.
Walking through the park, you'll appreciate the shade trees scattered throughout - a true blessing during those scorching Arizona summers. If you're lucky, you might even spot some desert wildlife like coyotes or javelinas passing through, a gentle reminder that the area shares this beautiful desert landscape with its original inhabitants.
The Woman Behind the Park
Ever wonder who Claire Weeks was? As the former president of the Terra del Sol Neighborhood Association for an impressive 14 years, she was something of a local hero. Claire didn't just talk about improving the neighborhood - she rolled up her sleeves and made it happen.
During her leadership, she built bridges with local schools, businesses, and churches while securing upgrades that transformed this park. Thanks to her determination, the space now boasts playground equipment, better lighting, and a lovely gazebo where community members gather.
But Claire's community spirit extended far beyond park improvements. She organized neighborhood cleanups, tackled graffiti, set up night patrols, and created social groups for seniors. Her compassion also led her to spend 10 years with the Top Dog Agency training service dogs, and she even read newspapers for visually impaired listeners on Sun Sounds Radio.
Where the Community Comes Together
More than just a park, this space represents the neighborhood's living room. Year-round, it hosts everything from intimate weddings to lively parties and an annual children's Halloween Party that locals look forward to.
The improvements Claire secured through grants have added to the park's functionality. Neighbors appreciate the well-maintained and family-friendly atmosphere.
What You'll Find
At the heart of the park lies a grassy open area that's ideal for just about anything - playing catch, walking your dog, or simply lying back and cloud-watching. It provides enough room for kids to play games of tag or enjoy other outdoor activities.
If you have little ones, they'll love the playground with its multiple slides, monkey bars, jungle gym, and four swings. Just note that some equipment might be challenging for kids under 5 without a helping hand - the steps and slide exits sit fairly high off the ground.
Need to take a break? You'll come across benches thoughtfully placed across the park, many nestled in shaded spots for comfort. For gatherings, there's a central gazebo (some call it a rotunda) that functions as the park's focal point, plus a ramada and several picnic tables for outdoor meals.
One thing to keep in mind: the park doesn't have public restrooms - probably the most significant drawback mentioned by those who visit regularly.
