About Friendship Park
A Desert Landmark with Character
Found in Yuma, Arizona next to a golf course sits Friendship Park, home to a water tower that's become something of a local icon. Built back in the 1960s, this towering structure has been spruced up over the years to keep it looking good while still doing its job. It's not just for show, though - in the afternoon, it casts a much-appreciated shadow over the splash pad and surrounding areas, offering a respite from Arizona's relentless sun.
The Tower That Stands Out
At the heart of the park stands a 2-million-gallon hydropillar water tank - pretty unique for this corner of the Southwest. You won't find many elevated water tanks like this one around these parts.
Back in 2003, Yuma's Public Works Department gave the tower a much-needed makeover. After years of baking in the desert heat and sun, it was definitely time for some TLC. The renovation wasn't just a quick paint job - they had to deal with lead removal before applying a serious three-layer coating system: zinc-rich primer, polyurethane middle layer, and a fluoropolymer finish to top it off.
Places to Play
The park offers plenty of ways to stay active. There are several tennis courts and pickleball courts that get regular use from local players. If those aren't your thing, there are baseball fields, a sand volleyball court, and open grassy areas excellent for impromptu soccer games or just running around.
When the temperature climbs (and in Yuma, it definitely does), the splash pad becomes the place to be. The water runs refreshingly cold - exactly what you need when the thermometer pushes past 100 degrees during those scorching summer months.
Kid-Friendly Fun
Near the splash pad, you'll come across a recently updated playground with modern equipment. Kids can challenge themselves on various climbing structures, enjoy the cool double swings, and explore other play features.
Just note that the playground works best for children three and older, as some of the equipment might be a bit challenging for the really little ones. While large umbrella structures provide some shade, you'll still want to bring sun protection if you're visiting during the middle of the day.
Gathering Spots
The park has numerous covered picnic areas (ramadas) complete with tables and BBQ grills. You can find these convenient spots near both the splash pad and playground, making it easy to keep an eye on the kids while you relax.
If you're planning a larger get-together, you might want to reserve a ramada ahead of time - they tend to get snagged quickly. The park provides a green space in the desert landscape, with grassy areas that contrast with the arid surroundings of Yuma.
Practical Details
You'll come across public restrooms between the tennis and pickleball courts, with water fountains nearby when you need a quick drink. The park is generally kept in good shape, clean and well-lit for those evening visits.
Dog owners, feel free to bring your four-legged friends - just keep them leashed. With plenty of walking paths, grassy spots, and shaded areas, it's a nice place for a stroll with your pet. Conveniently located at the foot of Yuma's water tower and close to the Civic Center and Ray Kroc field, Friendship Park is easily accessible no matter where you're coming from in town.
