About Wilson Park

A Walk Through History

Set in the heart of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Wilson Park holds the distinction of being the city's first and oldest public park. Spanning nearly 23 acres, this historic green space has been part of the community since 1906.

The park has changed hands a few times over its lifetime - first privately owned by A.L. Trent, then purchased by local businessmen in the mid-1920s, before finally finding its permanent home with the City of Fayetteville in 1944.

Whimsical Art Around Every Corner

A notable feature is "The Castle" - a playful sculpture crafted by local artist Frank Williams back in 1981. Originally named "Seven Points," this whimsical creation has become a photographer's dream and a magical playground for kids.

The Castle incorporates an active natural spring in its design, which once fed into Trent's Pond (a swimming hole from the park's earlier days). Over time, artist Eugene Sargent has added more delightful touches within the park, including flower-shaped benches, a 45-foot earthworm retaining wall, and a surprisingly charming 14-foot long skink sculpture.

Recreation for Everyone

When summer rolls around, the municipal swimming pool opens its gates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, becoming a refreshing escape from Arkansas heat. Sports enthusiasts can take their pick from tennis courts, basketball courts, newly added pickleball courts, a volleyball court, and a baseball field.

The playground areas are thoughtfully designed for different age groups. Little ones have their own toddler playground, while older kids can enjoy more challenging equipment nearby. The swings section never seems to go out of style, and the unique musical playground lets kids create their own tunes with built-in instruments.

Scull Creek meanders along the eastern edge of the park, flowing under the swimming pool before continuing on its way out the western boundary. On warm days, you'll often spot children wading in the creek, hunting for crawfish, or simply cooling their feet in the gentle current.

Natural Splendor

Wilson Park features a mature landscape. Towering trees create welcome patches of shade around the grounds, complemented by lovely gardens and a tranquil spring-fed pond.

Tree enthusiasts might want to seek out the park's impressive bois d'arc (also known as "Osage Orange"). This century-old giant has earned its place among Fayetteville's "Amazing Trees" and stands as a living witness to the park's long history.

Comfort and Convenience

Wilson Park offers several amenities. Picnic tables are scattered throughout, many tucked under shady spots well-suited for a family lunch. If you're planning a cookout, you'll discover several BBQ grills available for public use, and the recently renovated restroom facilities are centrally located and well-maintained.

A paved walking trail circles the park in a 0.9-mile loop and connects to Fayetteville's larger Greenway trail system. Four-legged friends are welcome too - just keep them on a leash. You'll come across pet waste stations with bags provided within the park.

With its recreational activities, natural beauty, and artistic elements, Wilson Park remains a popular gathering place in Fayetteville.
