About the Location
History and Origins
Boyle Park is a 243-acre urban park located in west-central Little Rock, Arkansas. The land for the park was donated to the City of Little Rock in 1929 by Dr. John F. Boyle, with the stipulation that it be used for recreational purposes. Situated along Rock Creek, the park features densely-wooded, gently-rolling terrain that provides a natural oasis within the city.
The park has historical significance, as it was developed in part by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. The CCC constructed several rustic-style buildings using native stone, including pavilions, a spring house, a caretaker's cabin, and a combination water tower/pump house/garage.
Historic Landmarks
The structures built by the CCC, along with two culverts and a low-water bridge, were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. These historic elements add character and cultural significance to the park landscape.
Trails and Natural Features
Boyle Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. The park contains hiking and biking trails, including both paved and earthen paths. In recent years, the trail system has been expanded and improved, with over 7 miles of mountain biking trails now available.
The park also features open meadows, wooded areas, and Rock Creek, which flows through the property, creating opportunities for fishing and wildlife observation.
Amenities and Recreation
For families and sports enthusiasts, Boyle Park provides multiple amenities. The park includes playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas. Recent upgrades have added a new, modern playground with natural play elements and equipment designed to be accessible to children of all abilities.
Additionally, a bike skills park has been constructed to complement the expanded trail system. Boyle Park serves as an important green space for Little Rock residents, offering a place for outdoor recreation, community gatherings, and connection with nature within the urban environment.
