About the Location
Location and History
Nestled eight miles northeast of Bakersfield, California, Hart Memorial Park stretches along the Kern River, offering a peaceful retreat from city life. Back in 1921, it began its life as Kern River Park, but in 1947, it was renamed to honor County Supervisor John Hart, the visionary who championed its creation.
This natural oasis covers 370 acres and is part of the larger 1,012-acre Kern River County Park complex.
Natural Environment
What truly makes Hart Park special is its serene natural setting. Tall shade trees create cool sanctuaries, while green lawns roll out against the backdrop of stunning views. It's an excellent place to catch your breath away from Bakersfield's urban bustle.
The park is alive with wildlife - you might spot kit foxes, possums, raccoons, beavers, muskrats, or skunks going about their business. Bird enthusiasts can look out for elegant white egrets and majestic blue herons, while various duck species paddle across the waters. One of the park's unique features? The peacocks that strut freely through certain areas, showing off their magnificent plumage.
If you visit in spring, you'll find a carpet of wildflowers, including the red flower heart display that makes for a nice photo opportunity.

Lakes and Fishing
The park's two lakes spread across 10 acres and offer a tranquil spot for fishing enthusiasts and those looking to relax by the water. If you're hoping to hook trout, catfish, or bass, remember to bring your state fishing license.
On hot days, some visitors cool off with a swim in the lakes, however you should know there are no lifeguards on duty. Also worth noting is that the lakes can contain parasites that might cause skin irritation - so take a dip at your own discretion.
The Kern River
Running alongside the park, the Kern River adds a beautiful, flowing element to the landscape. While it's certainly picturesque, it demands respect.
The river's currents are powerful, and hazards like submerged trees lurk beneath the surface. If you do decide to venture into the water, always wear a life jacket - this isn't just cautious advice; it's potentially life-saving. The river has claimed numerous lives, particularly visitors who weren't familiar with its deceptive strength.
Picnic Areas and Amenities
Hart Memorial Park is excellent for picnicking. You'll discover numerous spots - both for individuals and groups - complete with tables and grills scattered under the shade of majestic trees, providing welcome relief from the California sun.
If you're in the mood for exploration, the park offers access to hiking and equestrian trails. A convenient parking lot at the east entrance is a wonderful launching point for trail adventures. The Lions Trail is particularly worth checking out, with its rewarding views of the surrounding landscape.
For families with young children, two modern playgrounds provide spaces where kids can climb, slide, and play to their hearts' content.

Recreational Activities
Beyond the fishing and hiking, Hart Park has something for nearly everyone. Disc golf enthusiasts flock to the challenging course that winds through the park.
You can also try your hand at kayaking in the river's calmer sections (with proper safety gear, of course), while the open grassy areas make perfect spots for flying kites, organizing an impromptu volleyball game, or simply lounging with a good book.
When temperatures cool down, the surrounding trails transform into excellent terrain for mountain biking and trail running.
Safety Considerations
Your safety matters, so keep a few things in mind when visiting Hart Park. If you swim in either the Kern River or the lakes, you're doing so at your own risk - there are no lifeguards monitoring these waters.
The river's currents are not to be underestimated. It's sobering to know that over 300 people have lost their lives in the Kern River through the years.
During summer, keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes along the hiking trails. While encounters are uncommon, it's wise to maintain a safe distance and move away calmly if you spot one.
Visitor Information
You can enjoy the park daily from 5 AM to 10 PM. Restrooms are available throughout, but cleanliness can be hit-or-miss. You might want to bring hand sanitizer and toilet paper just to be safe.
Good news for dog lovers - the park is dog-friendly, but you'll need to keep your furry friends leashed. Several areas allow dogs to exercise, although remember to clean up after your pet.
Hart Memorial Park offers a blend of recreational opportunities and wildlife watching in a scenic setting along the Kern River.
