About the Location

A Step Back in Time

Tucked into Bakersfield's Westchester neighborhood at the corner of Truxtun Avenue and Elm Street, Jastro Park stretches across 8.7 acres of green space that's been a community gathering spot for over a century. Established in 1917, this two-block oasis got its landscaping (and name) courtesy of Henry A. Jastro in 1925.

Unique Landmarks

A commemorative plaque honors Henry Jastro's generous contribution, but that wasn't his only gift to the park. In 1927, he donated an outdoor amphitheater designed by Charles H. Biggar. It's one of just three open-air amphitheaters in Bakersfield and stands out for its audience space that skips the built-in seating. The stage could use a little TLC, but it remains a charming throwback to simpler times.

The park also houses meaningful war memorials honoring those who served in World War II and the Korean War. These monuments aren't just static displays - they're active sites where biannual services commemorate recently deceased veterans, adding depth and purpose to the park's peaceful grounds.

Growing with the Times

Jastro Park has evolved considerably through the decades. The original pool (once home to Bakersfield High School's swim team) was replaced in 2004 with a modern spray park as part of citywide aquatic updates. Recent improvements brought welcome shade covers to the playgrounds and swing areas - a lifesaver during Bakersfield's scorching summers.

Play All Day

The spray park (or splash pad) draws crowds of happy kids from Memorial Day through Labor Day, running daily from 11 AM to 6 PM (except Mondays, when it's closed for maintenance). It's a great spot to cool down when temperatures soar.

Kids also love the updated playground equipment, which includes multiple play structures, a zipline, and eight swings - all now protected by shade structures that keep the metal surfaces from becoming too hot to touch.

Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the basketball courts, pickleball courts, and a tennis court. While generally well-maintained, some pickleball players mention the courts could use resurfacing - but that doesn't stop the regular players from showing up.

Gather & Celebrate

Looking for a place to host your next family reunion or birthday party? Jastro Park shines as a community gathering spot with numerous picnic areas scattered around the grounds. Some tables benefit from natural shade, while others have dedicated shade structures.

For larger get-togethers, the covered pavilion provides ample space, and some picnic zones even offer electrical outlets. If you're planning a cookout, you'll appreciate the BBQ grills in designated areas - just remember to bring your charcoal and grilling tools.

Natural Neighbors

As you stroll through the park, you might spot finches and doves fluttering among the trees or glimpse ground squirrels and rabbits going about their business. These wild residents add charm to the urban green space. The park is also dog-friendly, with convenient waste stations supplying bags for responsible pet owners.

Good to Know

Jastro Park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 10 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy its amenities. Restrooms are available, however their cleanliness can be hit-or-miss depending on when you visit.

The park's central location makes it easy to reach, even if you're relying on public transportation. No matter if you're looking for a quick lunchtime walk on the paths, a place to toss a frisbee on open grassy areas, or just a peaceful spot to unwind, Jastro Park offers a welcome green retreat in the heart of Bakersfield.
