About the Location
Park Overview
Located just north of Bakersfield, Kern River County Park covers 1,012 acres along the Kern River. Dating back to 1929, this expansive natural haven offers a delightful mix of outdoor activities centered around the beautiful Kern River. It's a good option for families wanting to spread out and enjoy nature.
Hart Memorial Park
At the heart of it all lies Hart Memorial Park, covering 370 acres with two lakes and three winding canals. You'll find plenty of grassy areas shaded by magnificent trees - meant for laying out a blanket and enjoying a leisurely picnic. Walking paths meander throughout, inviting you to take a stroll and soak in the surroundings.
Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck catching trout, catfish, and bass in the lakes. The wildlife here doesn't disappoint either - keep your eyes peeled for raccoons, squirrels, and turtles going about their day. You might even spot some ducks paddling along, or if you're really lucky, catch a glimpse of skunks or majestic condors.
Recreational Areas
Just a short jaunt from the main park, Lake Ming spans 140 acres and welcomes motorboats and the occasional sailboat. The lake offers waterfront picnic spots and a 50-space campground for those wanting to extend their stay.
Animal lovers won't want to miss the California Living Museum (CALM), a charming 14-acre zoo and living museum within the park. Home to 80 species native to California, CALM also showcases plants representing different regions of Kern County.
Sports Facilities
Golf more your speed? The Kern River Golf Course features an 18-hole public course set on rolling terrain adjacent to the river - a beautiful backdrop for your game.
For team sports and active recreation, the park doesn't disappoint with its impressive complex of 20 soccer fields, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits.
Camping Options
The Kern River Campground offers 50 sites across two sections, accommodating both tents and RVs, but without hookups. The recently renovated restrooms include flush toilets and free shower stalls - a welcome comfort after a day of outdoor activities.
Falling asleep to the gentle sounds of the flowing river is perhaps the most magical part of camping here. Rates typically run between $15 and $30 per night depending on when you visit.
Picnic Areas and Playgrounds
If you're planning an intimate family lunch or a larger gathering, you'll find picnic areas around the park that can accommodate groups of various sizes. Many of these spots offer nice views of the surrounding landscape.
Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at multiple playgrounds scattered throughout the grounds. The park staff maintain clean facilities throughout the grounds.
Recreation Opportunities
All year long, you can enjoy picnicking, hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. Dog owners particularly appreciate the spacious grounds - it's an excellent place to let your four-legged friend stretch their legs.
When temperatures climb, the river provides a refreshing escape with its cool waters flowing down from mountain snowmelt. Located just a 10-minute drive from Bakersfield, it's an accessible option when you want some fresh air and open spaces.
