About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away in Berkeley, CA, Greg Brown Park is a cozy urban retreat spanning 0.58 acres (25,270 square feet). While it may be small in size, this neighborhood space offers a surprising variety of recreational possibilities for locals looking to enjoy some fresh air.
Historical Background
Before becoming the park we know today, this green space was known as the Harmon Street Neighborhood Park. It was later renamed to honor a young person who tragically collapsed and passed away during a Berkeley High School basketball game.
The park's roots stretch back to the early 1900s when Berkeley purchased the initial land. The space grew in 1973 when the city acquired additional parcels using funding from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
Dedication and Purpose
Both the park and its clubhouse were officially welcomed into the community during an open house celebration on May 27, 1976.
Today, Greg Brown Park represents a cherished neighborhood gathering spot, where both kids and adults can enjoy its recreational facilities and take a moment to connect with nature and community in the midst of urban Berkeley.
