About Indian Rock Park

A Rock Climber's Haven in Berkeley Hills

Situated in the slopes of the Berkeley Hills sits Indian Rock Park, a small yet remarkable public space that punches well above its weight. At its heart stands an impressive outcropping of Northbrae rhyolite - volcanic rock deposited around 10 million years ago that's now become something of a local landmark.

Since at least the 1930s, this distinctive formation has drawn rock climbing and bouldering enthusiasts from near and far. Even climbing legends like Richard M. Leonard and David Brower cut their teeth on these very rocks - it's pretty cool to think you might be following in their handholds!

Climb On

If you're just starting your climbing journey or you've been scaling rocks for years, there's something here for you. The park's varied routes accommodate all skill levels, making it an ideal training ground to develop your technique.

Many climbers come specifically for the bouldering opportunities on this volcanic playground. If you become a regular, you might find yourself attempting the popular traverse route along the rock's face - a favorite challenge among the climbing community. And if one rock isn't enough for you, Castle Rock is just a five-minute walk away.

Views That Take Your Breath Away

Make it to the top and you'll be rewarded with truly spectacular panoramas. The vista sweeps across downtown Oakland, the University of California Berkeley campus, central Berkeley, San Francisco Bay, San Francisco itself, and stretches of Marin County.

On clear days, you can spot all three of the bay's major bridges - the Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Rafael Bridge. Our tip: the park is absolutely magical at sunset, when the bay and San Francisco are bathed in golden light. Equally mesmerizing is the evening scene, with city lights twinkling across the water.

Getting to the Top

Don't worry if serious rock climbing isn't your thing. Two sets of stone steps carved into the main formation during the Great Depression provide an easier route to the summit. These steps, along with Indian Rock Path (a public walkway connecting to nearby streets), make the experience accessible to more visitors.

Just a word of caution - the rock can be slippery when wet, so take it easy during or after rain. While the park isn't fully ADA accessible, the carved stone steps on the south side offer a relatively manageable route up for many people.

What to Expect

The park keeps things simple but has the basics covered. You'll come across a few picnic tables across the street from the main rock formation and a water fountain to quench your thirst after a climb. Dog owners, rejoice - the park is dog-friendly, and you'll often see locals enjoying the open space with their four-legged companions.

Street parking is available in the surrounding residential neighborhood, but note that there are no public restrooms in the park itself.

A Piece of History

Beyond its geological wonders, Indian Rock Park carries significant historical weight. It was gifted to Berkeley in 1917 by Duncan McDuffie, a notable environmentalist and real estate developer, as part of the Mason-McDuffie development of Northbrae.

The park's human history stretches back much further, though. Look closely and you'll spot mortar holes in the rock - silent testament to the Ohlone people who used this site long before European settlement.

Nature Restored

Recent years have seen thoughtful conservation work to enhance the park's natural character. Non-native Eucalyptus trees have been removed, making way for native California species like California Buckeye, Western Redbud, and California flannelbush.

Thanks to the care of the local community, this natural treasure remains well-preserved - a little oasis of geology, history, and adventure in the Berkeley Hills that continues to inspire each new generation of visitors.
