Dry Creek Trailhead
About Dry Creek Trailhead
Trail Hub
Located at the southwest corner of Sunnyside and Shepherd Avenues in Clovis, California, the Dry Creek Trailhead provides access to several connecting trails. Built by the City of Clovis, this 3-acre facility connects four trails together, making it a central access point to the region's trail network.
With roughly 2 million people passing through annually, this trailhead is a busy hub for the local trail network. From here, you can hop onto the 2.5-mile Dry Creek Trail that meanders through Dry Creek Park and Cottonwood Park before linking up with the Clovis Old Town Trail.
Trail Experience
The Dry Creek Trail offers a pleasant contrast to the surrounding urban environment. The path winds alongside a gentle stream, with trees creating a natural canopy that shields you from the California sun. On clear days, you might catch breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains from Sequoia National Park and Yosemite Valley in the distance.
The trail creates a nice natural atmosphere despite being close to the city. Keep your eyes peeled during the right season and you might spot wild blackberries growing along the path - nature's little trailside snack.
Historical Elements
The trailhead isn't just functional - it's a nod to local heritage. The design thoughtfully incorporates elements reflecting the area's agricultural and water history, turning a simple starting point into a space that tells a story.
As you explore, you'll notice granite outcroppings, stacked stone walls, an old-fashioned windmill, and a cleverly disguised drain inlet masquerading as a water well. Take a moment to read the informational plaques scattered throughout - they offer fascinating insights into the agricultural and water heritage that shaped this region.
Sustainable Design
Beneath its surface, Dry Creek Trailhead is quietly innovative. The facility was designed with water efficiency and low maintenance in mind, making it as environmentally friendly as it is beautiful.
The facility includes a stormwater retention and detention system hidden below the parking lot. This system can capture up to 197,000 gallons of stormwater, allowing it to slowly filter into the ground and replenish the aquifer. It's an effective approach to water conservation.
Amenities
Practical comforts make this trailhead particularly user-friendly. The clean restrooms are reliably maintained - always a welcome feature before hitting the trails. When you're ready for a break, plenty of picnic tables await, with some offering much-appreciated shade for those warm California days.
Staying hydrated is easy thanks to a convenient water bottle filling station. The parking lot offers generous space for visitors, but it's worth arriving early during spring and summer weekends when the lot tends to fill quickly.
Connectivity
More than just a recreational space, the Dry Creek Trailhead functions as a transportation hub connecting the community. From here, you can make your way to downtown Clovis, local transit, business districts, retail centers, educational facilities, and even neighboring Fresno.
Not sure where to go? Check out the on-site maps showing existing and planned trails throughout Clovis and beyond. With paths stretching for miles in various directions, you've got endless options for walking, jogging, running, or cycling adventures.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Four-legged friends are more than welcome at Dry Creek Trailhead, making this a very dog-friendly destination. The expansive trail system provides plenty of space for pups to stretch their legs while their humans enjoy the natural surroundings. It's no wonder this spot has become a favorite among local dog owners.
