About the Location

A Hidden Oasis in the City

Just blocks from downtown Concord, California lies Markham Nature Park and Arboretum, a 16-acre space that offers a break from urban life. This peaceful retreat began its story in 1966 when Ira and Bea Markham sold part of their property to the city, but it wasn't until 1981 that a passionate group of locals formed the Markham Regional Arboretum Society and set out to transform this land into the verdant haven we see today.

Wander Through Nature's Canvas

As you stroll through the park, you'll notice much of it remains delightfully wild, with Galindo Creek meandering through shade-dappled groves. After a good rain, the creek comes alive, creating a pleasant soundtrack of flowing water throughout the natural setting.

The park features thoughtfully designed demonstration gardens that take you on a global botanical journey. From Australia to South Africa, East Asia to California and the Mediterranean, each area showcases plants native to these diverse regions. Plant enthusiasts will appreciate that everything is clearly labeled, making your visit as educational as it is beautiful.

The International Garden features a collection of plants from similar climates worldwide - you might find ideas for your own garden here.

Nature's Seasonal Symphony

Depending on when you visit, you'll experience an entirely different park. The landscape changes throughout the year as different plants bloom in their seasons. Fall displays colorful foliage popular with photographers, while summer's leafy canopy offers shade from the California sun.

If you're here around dusk (particularly after 5 PM), keep your eyes peeled - you might spot local coyotes making their evening rounds through the grounds.

Community Roots Run Deep

The park's Community Garden buzzes with activity as locals tend to their edible plants and create havens for pollinators. For special occasions, the Bud Hansen Wisteria Arbor is a picturesque backdrop - it's a popular spot for weddings and events, and it's easy to see why.

Picnic areas are scattered throughout the park where you can have a meal surrounded by nature. There's even a charming vine-covered gazebo with a cement foundation that's fantastic for gathering with friends or simply sitting quietly with your thoughts.

Paths to Explore

The park offers 2.4 miles of trails through various gardens and natural areas. Locals use these paths for yoga, reading, studying, or taking a break from daily routines.

The varied settings attract photographers - teenagers often take homecoming pictures among the plants and greenery.

Good to Know Before You Go

This natural landscape is lovingly maintained by volunteers - landscapers, arborists, native plant enthusiasts, and master gardeners who pour their knowledge and passion into keeping the park beautiful. During the year, you might catch various classes and workshops that share this expertise with the community.

Parking can be limited, so plan accordingly if you're visiting during peak times. You're welcome to bring your four-legged friend, but remember to keep them leashed (and be mindful of those evening coyote visitors).

The best part? Admission is completely free, making this natural retreat accessible to everyone. Just note that restroom facilities are limited - portable toilets are sometimes available, but it's best to plan ahead for your visit.

Regardless of whether you're a plant lover, a peace-seeker, or just need a quick escape from city life, Markham Nature Park offers a refreshing breath of nature right in Concord's backyard.
