Hilton Head County Park
About Hilton Head County Park
Play & Recreation
Tucked away in El Cajon, California, Hilton Head County Park spans a modest 9.9 acres but packs in plenty of outdoor fun. This local park provides a nice break from the daily routine, with mountains in the background adding natural beauty to the setting.
The park includes a multi-use sports field and basketball court for various activities. The versatile field accommodates everything from soccer matches to baseball games, so bring your gear of choice!
For those of us trying to stay fit (or at least pretending to), there are exercise stations dotted around the grounds and a walking path that circles the field - ideal for getting those steps in while the kids play.
Splash & Cool Down
A highlight of the park is the pirate-themed splash pad that operates daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. between May and October. For just $3, kids can run wild through water shooters, sprinklers, and squeal with delight when the giant tip-over water bucket drenches everything in sight.
A word to the wise: bring water shoes as the surface can transform into something akin to hot lava during summer afternoons. The splash pad area has somewhat limited seating, so you might want to toss a portable chair or picnic blanket into the car before heading over.
Picnics & Gathering Spots
The park offers several shaded picnic areas complete with barbecue facilities - ideal for everything from family lunches to birthday celebrations. There are five pavilions available: three larger ones with five tables each and two cozier options with two tables each.
These covered pavilions provide much-needed shelter from the California sun and make great spots for casual gatherings. You'll discover restroom facilities on-site (though they sometimes show their age) and drinking fountains scattered around the grounds for when you need to hydrate.
Family Fun
The little ones have plenty to explore with two separate playground areas to conquer. One features an impressive two-story play structure that's bound to elicit some "wow" reactions, while the other continues the nautical theme with pirate-themed designs that complement the splash pad.
Both playgrounds offer multiple slides and climbing structures suitable for various ages and adventurousness levels. Just note that the park can get pretty busy, especially on weekends and during splash pad season.
Natural Setting
Perhaps what makes Hilton Head special is its setting. The views of the surrounding hills create a peaceful atmosphere that elevates a simple park day into something more memorable.
The open, grassy areas are well-maintained and great for throwing a frisbee or simply lounging on a blanket, though you might want to claim one of the shaded spots early as parts of the park offer limited protection from the sun. Parking is somewhat limited, so you might end up having to park on the surrounding residential streets during peak times.
