About Amerige Park
A Glimpse of Fullerton History
Tucked away in Fullerton sits Amerige Park, a 7.89-acre green space with roots stretching back to 1917. What stands today was once Fullerton High School, later renamed to honor the city's founders, George and Edward Amerige. It stands as a piece of local history, with nearly a century of community memories.
Baseball Dreams Were Made Here
If these grounds could talk, they'd tell tales of legendary baseball moments. During the 1930s and 1940s, Amerige Park served as spring training headquarters for several Pacific Coast League teams, including the Hollywood Stars (1935-36), Seattle Rainiers (1937-40), Sacramento Solons (1941-42; 1944), and the Los Angeles Angels (1946-55).
Ever heard of Joe DiMaggio, Walter Johnson, or Satchel Paige? These Hall of Famers once played on this very field. Talk to the locals, and many will reminisce about their own baseball days here - especially those who played Colt League Baseball back in the 1960s.
The Park Today
The baseball tradition continues strong at Amerige Park. It's now home base for Fullerton's Pony Baseball league and acts as the playing grounds for the Hope International University Royals, an NAIA college baseball team.
The main baseball facility, Duane Winters Field, isn't massive but offers a comfortable 250-seat bleacher section for spectators. The vintage field is well-maintained and represents one of Fullerton's lesser-known baseball venues.
What to Expect
Unlike typical multi-purpose parks, Amerige is primarily dedicated to baseball. The field itself is the star attraction, and you'll notice the care put into maintaining it as soon as you arrive.
You'll come across convenient off-street parking behind the community center, and the seating offers great views of the action. One tip: Southern California sunshine can be intense, so you might want to bring an umbrella for some welcome shade during daytime games.
Beyond Baseball
The park isn't all about sports - it's also home to the Fullerton Community Center, which hosts various community activities all year long. The park occasionally hosts local cultural events for the community.
The Amerige Experience
There's a peaceful, cozy vibe here that's hard to find at larger venues. One quirky detail that adds character? The trains that regularly rumble past nearby - a unique soundtrack to this historic setting that somehow feels perfectly fitting.
