Roger B. Chaffee Park
About Roger B. Chaffee Park
Park Overview
Situated in Fullerton, California, Roger B. Chaffee Park is a charming little green space spanning just 2.63 acres. Opened in 1977, it's one of Fullerton's three astronaut parks - a pretty unique theme as far as local parks go.
The park pays tribute to Roger B. Chaffee, a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy who dedicated his life to the American space program. A humble space, but one with a meaningful story behind it.
What You'll Find Here
The heart of the park is a nicely maintained open field that gently slopes, creating a peaceful spot to throw down a blanket and enjoy some fresh air. Mature trees encircle the area, casting welcome patches of shade and adding a touch of natural beauty.
While it's not massive, the park offers plenty of room for casual games, picnics, or just stretching your legs. Sitting right next to a school and easily accessible from Rosecrans Avenue, it's a convenient spot for local families and students.
A Touch of History
The park's namesake, Roger Chaffee, joined NASA's Apollo Program in 1963. Tragically, he lost his life on January 27, 1967, during a fire that broke out while testing the Apollo One command module before launch.
This quiet park honors his contribution and sacrifice to the American space program.
The Apollo-1 Trail
What makes this park especially interesting is that it's part of a thoughtful series of Fullerton parks honoring the astronauts who perished in the Apollo 1 mission.
A recreation trail connects this park to the other two astronaut parks, forming what's known as the Apollo-1 Trail. This creates a nice opportunity to visit all three memorial parks while getting some exercise - a fitting way to remember these space pioneers while enjoying the outdoors.
