Park Overview
Roger B. Chaffee Park is a small public park located in Fullerton, California. Spanning 2.63 acres, it was opened in 1977 as one of Fullerton's three astronaut parks.
The park is dedicated to the memory of Roger B. Chaffee, a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy who devoted his life to the United States Space Program.
Historical Significance
Chaffee was selected for NASA's Apollo Program in 1963 but tragically died on January 27, 1967, during a fire that occurred while conducting a pre-launch simulation of the Apollo One command module.
This park serves as a tribute to his service and sacrifice in the pursuit of space exploration.
The Apollo-1 Trail
The park is part of a unique series of parks in Fullerton that honor the astronauts who lost their lives in the Apollo 1 mission.
It is connected to the other two astronaut parks via a recreation trail, forming what is known as the Apollo-1 Trail. This trail provides visitors with an opportunity to explore all three parks while engaging in outdoor activities.
