Historic Grounds and Architecture

Tucked away at the base of the Verdugo Mountains, Brand Park spreads across 31 acres of historic grounds in Glendale. At the heart of the park stands the Brand Library & Art Center, which wasn't always a hub for culture and learning - it was originally the mansion of Leslie C. Brand, a big name in Glendale's development story.

Built back in 1904, the mansion catches your eye immediately with its Indo-Saracenic architecture - a style inspired by the East Indian Pavilion from Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Today, the library has transformed into a specialized haven for art and music resources, where you can catch fascinating exhibitions and cultural events during the year.

Gardens and Museums

Wander through the park and you'll discover the tranquil Japanese Friendship Garden, a little piece of serenity complete with traditional landscaping, koi ponds lazily swimming with fish, and an authentic teahouse. If you're planning a visit, note that this peaceful retreat is open Monday through Thursday from 10 AM to 3 PM.

History buffs will appreciate the Doctor's House Museum, a beautifully restored Victorian home that offers a glimpse into Glendale's past. Both these attractions hold significant historical value, though keep in mind that interior tours might only be available at specific times.

Outdoor Recreation

Brand Park offers several options for physical activity. The network of hiking and biking trails leading into the Verdugo Mountains offers some breathtaking panoramic views that make the climb worthwhile.

The Brand Motorway Trail stands out among the options - a challenging 3.7-mile route that climbs about 1,800 feet. We'd recommend proper footwear and maybe even trekking poles, especially for the way down. The trail connects with other paths in the Verdugo Mountains, so you can extend your adventure if you're feeling ambitious.

Family-Friendly Amenities

Kids can play at the modern playground, which has separate areas for different age groups. During warmer months, the wading pool near the playground becomes a favorite spot for little ones to cool off.

Scattered around the park are numerous picnic areas complete with tables and BBQ grills - fantastic for anything from casual lunches to family reunions. Many spots offer good shade, and there are hot ash disposal bins available for safe BBQ cleanup.

Sports and Recreation Facilities

The park includes several sports facilities. You'll discover well-maintained baseball fields with shaded seating for spectators, spacious grassy areas meant for frisbee or casual ball games, and tennis courts that attract players of all skill levels.

Historical Monuments

History seems to peek through every corner of Brand Park. The Brand Family Cemetery features an eye-catching pyramid-shaped gravestone that stands out among traditional monuments. There's also the Statue of Miss American Green Cross, erected in 1928, which silently celebrates the importance of forest preservation.

Year-round, the park hosts various community events. With its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational facilities, Brand Park is a notable location in Glendale.
