About Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park

History and Location

Positioned in Huntington Beach, California, Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park spans a generous 106 acres of coastal terrain. Named after Harriett M. Wieder, who broke barriers as the first woman elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, this natural oasis opened its gates to the public on April 6, 2004.

Currently, about 33 acres function as actual parkland under County control, with the remaining areas restricted by private development agreements and long-term oil leases. Of the accessible parkland, only 4 acres are fully developed, while the other 30 acres remain beautifully preserved as natural habitat.

Park Design and Features

The park's design thoughtfully blends with its coastal surroundings, incorporating local plants and subtle, creative materials throughout its parking spaces, paths, seating areas, and playgrounds.

One of the most impressive features is the park's eco-friendly water management system. A bio-swale system captures rain and irrigation runoff, allowing water to be absorbed locally and replenish the groundwater instead of being wasted.

On clear days, you can soak in breathtaking views stretching all the way to Rancho Palos Verdes and even Catalina Island in the distance. The overlooks of the Bolsa Chica wetlands and ocean are equally stunning and meant for a moment of peaceful reflection.

Playground Areas

The newly renovated inclusive playgrounds feature separate zones for toddlers and older children. The playgrounds are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring ramps with gentle inclines that provide access to features at every level, making them truly ADA accessible and welcoming for wheelchair users.

The children's area comes packed with slides, monkey bars, and climbing structures. The zipline feature is popular with older children. All of this equipment pops with vibrant green colors against the park's natural backdrop.

Fitness Zone

Grown-ups aren't left out of the fun. The park's Fitness Zone offers a variety of body weight exercise stations and outdoor equipment to help you stay active while enjoying the fresh air. The workout area includes disability-friendly options, making outdoor exercise accessible to more visitors.

The equipment is well-maintained and positioned to provide scenic views while exercising.

Natural Environment

Beyond the developed section lies 30 acres of natural beauty with native vegetation, a seasonal creek, and peaceful willow trees. The hiking trails wind through these natural areas, where you might spot various bird species that frequent the nearby ecological preserve.

Visit in spring and you'll be treated to wildflowers painting the fields with splashes of color along the trails. The park borders the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, making it a prime spot for birdwatching, wildlife photography, or simply connecting with nature.

The trails are shared by hikers and mountain bikers alike, stretching toward both the ocean and nearby housing developments. Keep your eyes open and you might catch glimpses of raptors and other wildlife going about their day in their natural habitat.

Facilities

The park offers a 24-car parking lot that tends to fill quickly during peak times. Note that the lot closes around 6 PM, however street parking remains available during posted hours if you're planning an evening visit.

Clean public restrooms with sinks and soap are available until dusk. Throughout the grounds, you'll come across plenty of benches to rest on and open grassy areas that are ideal for spreading out a blanket, reading a book, or just watching the clouds drift by.

Visiting Information

Feel free to bring your four-legged friends along, but keep them leashed - especially important since coyotes have been spotted in the area. The trails can get dusty, so proper footwear is a must, particularly if there's rain in the forecast.

If you're up for more exploration, Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park connects to additional trails near Overlook Park, extending your outdoor adventure possibilities even further.
