C. David Molina Park
About C. David Molina Park
Park History
Positioned in Long Beach, California, C. David Molina Park spans a cozy 3.3 acres of neighborhood greenspace. Having opened its gates on August 21, 2018, the park pays tribute to Dr. C. David Molina, a true healthcare pioneer in the Long Beach community.
Back in 1962, Dr. Molina established the city's first-ever intensive care unit at Pacific Hospital and dedicated 21 years as the hospital's Emergency Department Director. His impact went even further when he developed Long Beach's paramedic system and personally trained the first generation of firefighter-paramedics.
Legacy and Contribution
Dr. Molina's compassion for his community didn't stop at the hospital doors. In 1980, he opened a Long Beach clinic specifically to serve those with limited financial resources. From these humble beginnings grew Molina Healthcare, which eventually blossomed into a Fortune 500 organization serving multiple states.
Features and Amenities
The heart of this park is undoubtedly its modern soccer field with synthetic turf that stays green year-round. With evening lighting and proper fencing, you'll often find locals enjoying matches well into the evening hours. While the field itself is beautifully maintained, just note that seating in the stands is somewhat limited.
Kids of all ages will appreciate the playground area with its bouncy safety surface and equipment designed for various abilities. The modern swings come with seat-locks, making them safer for the little ones who are still mastering the art of sitting upright.
For those looking to stay fit, there's exercise equipment scattered across the grounds, fantastic for an impromptu workout. A walking path loops around the soccer field, with thoughtfully placed benches at either end when you need a breather.
Feeling hungry after all that activity? Picnic tables sit near the playground and restrooms, offering a nice vantage point of both the soccer action and play areas. Just a heads-up - visitors might want to check for ants before settling in for their sandwich.
Natural Environment
What makes this park special is its connection to nature. The western edge borders the Dominguez Gap Wetlands Trail along the Los Angeles River, with the trailhead conveniently located at the far end of the parking lot.
If you're bringing your four-legged friend, you'll be happy to know the wetlands trail welcomes dogs (though you'll need to bring your own cleanup bags). It's a peaceful stretch that offers a little slice of nature and pleasant views of the LA River.
Practical Information
The parking situation can be a bit tricky - the lot is rather small and fills up quickly during soccer games and busy hours. If you find it full, street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood, but you might end up with a short walk to reach the park.
Restrooms are available on-site, although cleanliness can vary depending on when you visit. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM.
Community Impact
Since its creation, C. David Molina Park has become something of a neighborhood gathering place for North Long Beach residents, where families connect, sports enthusiasts compete, and neighbors interact.
It's a family-friendly environment - a place where children can play freely, adults can squeeze in some exercise, and everyone can enjoy a breath of fresh air together.
