About the Location

Exploring the Green Oasis

Set in Long Beach, California, El Dorado East Regional Park spreads across 388.2 acres of green space. The park is split into two distinct sections that each offer their own unique charm.

Area II unfolds across 165.8 acres between Spring Street and Wardlow Road, where you can find an archery range with some serious bragging rights - it was actually used during the 1984 Olympic competition! This section also offers overnight camping facilities, a serene lake with paddleboats, plenty of group picnic spots, and winding trails excellent for walking or biking adventures. The lake here pays tribute to Milton B. Arthur, a Recreation Commission member who was instrumental in securing this land as a public park.

Northern Adventures in Area III

Head north of Wardlow Road and you'll discover Area III's 203.6 acres, which opened to the public back in July 1974. This section features more group picnic areas, two picturesque lakes named Alamo and Coyote, and a delightful model train ride that's a hit with kids and adults alike. The walking and cycling paths here connect seamlessly with those in Area II, creating miles of exploration opportunities.

One of Area III's most distinctive features is Glider Hill, a natural elevation created when they dug out the lakes. Though originally envisioned as an amphitheater, it's found its true calling as a hotspot for model airplane enthusiasts. If you're into remote-controlled aircraft or drones, there's a designated area here just for you.

Get Active or Kick Back

Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just relax, El Dorado offers plenty of options. The stocked fishing lakes are home to Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Trout - just remember to bring your fishing license if you're over 16.

Cyclists can enjoy four miles of paved trails that wind through the park's scenic landscape. In 1975, five additional miles of cycling paths were added and dedicated to Billie Howe Boswell, a cherished educator who tragically lost her life while cycling near the park.

Step Back in Time at El Dorado Frontier

For a touch of nostalgic fun, El Dorado Frontier offers family entertainment with an old-west theme. Take a spin on the carousel, hop aboard the train ride for a tour of the park, or try your luck at gold panning. This area has a special appeal for younger visitors but holds charm for all ages.

Places to Play and Gather

Across the park, you can find at least four different playgrounds with equipment suited for various age groups, ensuring the little ones always have a place to burn off energy.

When it's time to refuel, numerous picnic areas with tables and benches await, many positioned under the cool shade of mature trees. Some spots come equipped with BBQ grills and can handle large groups of 50-100 people. Planning a big gathering? You can reserve these larger areas through the park office.

Natural Wonders

The park teems with wildlife - ducks paddle across the lakes, geese wander the grassy areas, squirrels dart between trees, and turtles sun themselves by the water's edge. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of species that call this urban oasis home.

For a deeper dive into nature, visit the Nature Center with educational exhibits and access to several nature trails. Options range from a quarter-mile paved path to more adventurous one and two-mile unpaved trails that wind through forested areas.

For the Four-Legged Friends

Dog lovers, rejoice! Near the entrance, you'll discover a designated dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs where your furry friends can play off-leash safely. Throughout the rest of the park, dogs are welcome as long as they're leashed.

Planning Your Visit

The park is open daily from 7AM to 8PM. Weekday admission runs $6 per vehicle, while weekend visits cost $8. If you're a regular, consider an annual pass - there are discounted rates available for seniors, disabled individuals, and veterans. Military personnel might even qualify for free annual passes.

With so much to explore and enjoy, El Dorado East Regional Park offers a great escape from the urban hustle without having to leave the city.
