Heartwell Park
About Heartwell Park
Park Overview
Positioned in Long Beach, California, Heartwell Park spreads across an impressive 122.5 acres of green goodness. The park is divided into four distinct sections, stretching from Clark Avenue to the San Gabriel River, just south of Carson Street. With its grass and old trees, it offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle.
A Bit of History
The park wasn't always known as Heartwell. Originally called Lakewood Park, it got its current name in February 1939 to honor Col. Charles Heartwell, who was heading up the Water Department at the time.
Col. Heartwell was actually the driving force behind the city purchasing 350 acres along Carson Street - land that would eventually become this treasured park. Things really started taking shape after park bonds passed in 1956, allowing for proper development of the space.
What You Can Do Here
The park features a fishing pond that's home to ducks, geese, and even some turtles. It's a fantastic spot for wildlife watching, but it's best not to feed bread to the birds (it's not great for their health).
If you're looking to get moving, the park features a winding bike and skate path within the grounds. The extensive walking trails also make it ideal for a leisurely stroll or a brisk morning walk.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the night-lighted game courts, athletic fields, and ball diamonds scattered around the park. On weekends, these areas host youth baseball and soccer games.
For the Little Ones
Kids have plenty of room to play at the dedicated playgrounds with separate zones for different age groups. The modern equipment includes fun climbing structures with multiple slides, and toddler-friendly swings, all set on safety-conscious padded flooring (with some sandy areas too).
When it's time for a snack or family gathering, you'll come across shaded picnic areas with tables around the park. These spots are fantastic for everything from casual lunches to birthday celebrations and holiday get-togethers.
Practical Stuff
There are public restrooms within the park that, while not the newest, are generally clean and functional.
For fitness buffs, there's a dedicated fitness course where you can work out in the fresh air.
As for parking, you can find spots along the surrounding streets, and since the park spans three city blocks, there are multiple entry points to choose from.
Beyond Recreation
Heartwell Park isn't just about outdoor fun - it's also home to some important community facilities. The Ruth Bach Library sits within the park grounds, offering a wealth of educational resources.
The park also leases space to organizations like the Girl Scouts of America and Camp Fire Girls, who use the areas for offices, meetings, and even overnight camping adventures.
Just next door, the Heartwell Golf Course features an 18-hole par-3 course that's fantastic for casual players and those looking to practice their swing. It comes complete with putting greens and a driving range.
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Dog owners flock to Heartwell Park for its spacious fields - ideal for walking pets and playing a game of fetch. These open areas are especially enjoyable during weekdays when there are fewer people around. Just remember to keep your furry friends on a leash for everyone's safety.
