DeForest Park
About DeForest Park
Recreational Area
Situated in North Long Beach, California, DeForest Park spans a generous 49.6 acres of urban greenery. It's really two parks in one: a 15-acre developed section with all the recreational fixings you'd expect, and the DeForest Wetlands - a 34.91-acre natural area that lets you escape the city without actually leaving it.
The developed section, which the city acquired back in 1976, has all the community essentials. Think sports facilities, playgrounds, and plenty of open spaces where locals gather to play, exercise, or simply enjoy some fresh air.
Sports and Recreation Facilities
If you're into sports, there are plenty of options. The 8 permanent pickleball courts come with good lighting for those evening games when you just can't call it quits. There are also basketball courts, volleyball courts, and baseball fields to choose from. Soccer enthusiasts will find goals available too - basically, there's a good variety of team sports available.
Looking to get a workout in? The park features outdoor exercise equipment and weight lifting machines that let you pump iron under the California sky. Around the park, long paved paths invite runners, walkers, and rollerbladers to get their cardio fix with a view.
Natural Wetlands
The DeForest Wetlands opened to the public in June 2018, transforming what was once overgrown exotic vegetation and barren land into something special. Today, you'll find freshwater wetlands, thriving wildlife habitats, recreational trails, and native plants - all while the area continues to serve its important flood control function for the Los Angeles River.
The wetlands offer a different kind of recreation - the quiet, contemplative kind. Here you can go bird watching, take peaceful walks, or join educational tours to learn about this unique ecosystem.
There's an environmental success story here too. The restoration project now filters 800-1,000 acre-feet of neighborhood watershed runoff annually before it reaches the Los Angeles River, significantly improving water quality.
Flora and Fauna
Wander through the natural area and you'll discover yourself in a riparian forest filled with cottonwoods, coast live oaks, and willows, with some non-native pepper trees mixed in. Head to the southern end, and the landscape shifts to open, weedy grassland with wetlands continuing throughout.
The wildlife here is diverse. Rabbits regularly hop about the grounds (much to the delight of younger visitors), and if you look skyward, you might spot hawks and various other bird species. Bring your camera - the diverse ecosystem offers plenty of photo-worthy moments.
Trails and Pathways
DeForest features a network of walking trails that meander through both developed and natural areas. In the wetlands, a wooden bridge crosses over a small stream, adding a touch of charm to your stroll. The nature trail offers a particularly peaceful experience, letting you disconnect from urban life for a little while.
For longer journeys, you can access the LA River bike trail directly from the park, making this a great jumping-off point for cycling adventures throughout Long Beach.
Amenities and Facilities
You'll discover picnic tables scattered within the park - great for family gatherings, birthday celebrations, or just enjoying a sandwich in the shade. Restroom facilities are available, but be aware they might have limited hours depending on when you visit.
Bringing your four-legged friend? The park is dog-friendly, however you'll need to keep your pet leashed at all times. Thankfully, waste bags are readily available so you can clean up after your pooch.
Visitor Information
DeForest Park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM. You'll come across street parking around the park's perimeter, which is usually sufficient except during peak times. If you're looking for a quieter experience, mornings typically offer more tranquility, while evenings and weekends buzz with more activity.
This green space is an important part of North Long Beach, offering both recreational opportunities and a connection to nature in an urban setting.
