About Willow Springs Park

Geological Features

Situated in Long Beach, California lies Willow Springs Park, a 48.2-acre natural haven that opened its gates in 2012. What makes this park interesting? Well, it sits right on top of the Cherry Hill Fault (part of the Newport/Inglewood Fault), giving it some seriously unique terrain.

The ground here actually rises about 4 millimeters each year due to this geological quirk. That might not sound like much, but over time it's created some pretty distinctive contours that won't be found in other Long Beach parks. These elevated spots include what many locals consider the highest point in the city of Long Beach.

Wetlands Restoration

In October 2017, the park unveiled its impressive wetlands restoration project. This initiative transformed 11 acres of previously neglected land into wetlands, reflecting the area's historical significance in providing water to early Long Beach residents back in the late 1800s.

The restoration preserves both the site's history and its unique topography while creating a diverse ecosystem. As you wander through, you'll notice educational signs that tell the story of the area's history and point out native plant species - a nice touch for curious minds.

Park Features

A walking loop takes you through water-capturing bio-swales that lead to an acre of restored seasonal wetlands. Beyond that, you'll discover 10 acres of habitat showcasing native plants and trees that belong in this ecosystem.

A constructed spring represents the original artesian spring that once provided water to Long Beach's early settlers. Around the lake area, you'll find several small benches - perfect spots to pause and take in the peaceful surroundings.

If you're a wildlife enthusiast, you might spot rabbits and various bird species hopping and flitting about, making this an ideal spot for some early morning birding. The park is also home to a bee sanctuary, doing its part for local pollinator conservation.

Longview Point

Longview Point is a four-acre section on the west side of Orange Avenue between Willow and Spring Streets. Perched at the highest point of the property, this spot rewards you with stunning views of the Long Beach skyline, the Port of Long Beach, Rancho Palos Verde, the Los Angeles Basin, and the San Gabriel Mountains.

The viewpoint really shines at sunset and into the evening hours, offering a peaceful retreat from city life. On clear days, you can see for miles in multiple directions - a rare treat in such an urban setting.

Environmental Benefits

This park serves environmental purposes as well. The grounds include a water retention basin that cleans and diverts water for reuse throughout the park, contributing to local conservation efforts.

You'll also find an outdoor environmental education classroom where community learning happens naturally. Occasionally, the park hosts educational events about beekeeping and native plant species for those looking to deepen their knowledge.

If you're into gardening, you might appreciate the free mulch pile that's typically available for public use - a small but meaningful perk for local green thumbs.

Visitor Information

Willow Springs Park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 8PM. The walking trails come in various difficulty levels, so whether you're looking for a gentle stroll or something more challenging, you'll discover a path that suits you.

A heads up before you visit: there are no restroom facilities within the park boundaries, so plan accordingly if you're intending to spend several hours exploring.

Dog lovers, rejoice! The park is dog-friendly, so your leashed four-legged friends are welcome to join you on the trails and open spaces. The diverse terrain and natural setting make it an enriching environment for both pets and their humans.
