About the Location
A Touch of History
What we now know as Alvarado Terrace Park started life as Summerland Park back in 1904 when the City of Los Angeles scooped up the land. It didn't keep that name for long though - soon after, it became Terrace Park.
In its early incarnation, this little urban oasis boasted a charming fish pond and lovely rose beds, all meticulously maintained by a dedicated full-time gardener. These days, the park has taken on a simpler vibe, featuring just grass and trees - a green respite in the concrete cityscape.
Where It Sits
Found in the historic Pico-Union district, southwest of Downtown LA, Alvarado Terrace Park sits nestled between Pico Boulevard and Alvarado Street. It's not huge, but it provides a welcome green space in the area.
The park sits at the center of the surrounding Alvarado Terrace Historic District and functions as a local gathering spot. With its two wedges of green space connected by concrete paths, it offers a pleasant spot to catch your breath amid the urban hustle.
What Makes It Special
At the north end of the park, you'll find something truly unique: Powers Place. This tiny brick-paved street stretches just 25 feet long, making it the shortest street in all of Los Angeles. How's that for a fun fact?
Both the park and Powers Place earned their place in history when they were designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #210 in February 1979. What really gives the area its distinctive character are the beautifully preserved historic houses surrounding the green space - creating a little pocket of old-world charm in the modern city.
Recent Additions
The park got a thoughtful upgrade in recent years with a custom-designed playground that pays homage to its surroundings. The equipment cleverly mimics the Victorian architecture of the historic Alvarado Heights neighborhood.
Look closely and you'll notice playground structures featuring details like wood shingles and brick siding - echoing the homes nearby. Safety wasn't overlooked either, with a spongy floor to cushion any tumbles. It's particularly well-suited for the younger crowd, roughly up to age 10.
How People Use It
Despite not being the biggest park around, it's become a cherished spot for local families and people walking their dogs. The grassy areas offer a nice place to relax, however they do need regular upkeep to stay looking their best.
You can visit daily between 6AM and 9:30PM to enjoy this welcome patch of green in an otherwise densely built urban area. While you won't find formal picnic areas or public restrooms here, it remains a treasured green space for neighbors seeking a moment of outdoor tranquility.
