It was originally dedicated in 1964 as the 19th Street Playground, but was renamed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. following his assassination in 1968.
In 1969-1970, the park grew from its initial 1.17 acres to 5.86 acres, adding various recreational facilities. A further expansion in the early 1980s brought the park to its current size of 8.9 acres.
