About the Location
Community Haven
Unidad Park is a small urban park in the Historic Filipinotown neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Established in 2007, this 0.35-acre park serves as an important community gathering space and cultural landmark.
Cultural Significance
The park's most notable feature is a large mural titled "Gintong Kasaysayan, Gintong Pamana" (A Glorious History, A Golden Legacy), which is considered the largest Filipino American mural in the country. Designed and painted by artist Eliseo Art Silva, the mural depicts the rich history of Filipino Americans and their involvement in the founding of the United Farm Workers movement.
This artwork attracts both local residents and tourists, serving as a focal point for cultural education and appreciation.
Green Initiatives
In 2012, responding to community desires, eighteen raised wooden garden beds were added to create a community garden. This addition has allowed local residents to engage in urban gardening and promote sustainable practices within the neighborhood.
Activities and Programming
Unidad Park offers free programming to community members, including exercise classes like Zumba and workshops on gardening, composting, and healthy eating. These activities help foster a sense of community and promote health and wellness among residents.
Cultural Events
The park plays a significant role in the annual Historic Filipinotown Festival and the Parol Festival and Parade, drawing thousands of visitors to the neighborhood and celebrating the area's cultural diversity.
