About the Location
A Journey Through Time
Situated in the heart of Los Angeles, Echo Park is a verdant urban retreat with a story that stretches back over 150 years. What began as a simple drinking water reservoir in 1868 transformed into something much more special when Joseph Henry Tomlinson reimagined the space in the 1890s, designing a public park with the elegant, flowing aesthetics of an English landscape.

Lake Life & Leisurely Strolls
At the heart of this 29-acre park sits Echo Park Lake, a 13-acre man-made body of water that is the park's central feature. Circling the lake, a mile-long walking path invites you to take a peaceful morning jog or an evening stroll as the city lights begin to twinkle in the distance.
The park got a serious facelift in 2013 - a $45 million renovation that breathed new life into this historic space, transforming it into the clean, welcoming retreat you'll find today.
One of the most charming experiences here has to be renting the swan-shaped paddle boats that grace the lake's surface. There's something wonderfully whimsical about paddling around in these elegant vessels, especially as dusk falls and they light up against the darkening sky, offering unique perspectives of the downtown skyline.
Something for Everyone
Whether you're looking to keep the kids entertained at the modern playground, squeeze in a workout at the outdoor fitness area, or simply relax with friends, Echo Park has options for all these activities.
Scattered across the grounds, you'll come across plenty of picnic areas complete with concrete tables and benches - some even feature fire pits for impromptu cookouts. These spots make for perfect gathering places when you want to share food and conversation in the open air.
If peaceful contemplation is more your style, grab a fishing rod - fishing is allowed in the lake, and locals often spend hours here, line in water, taking in the serene surroundings.
Nature's Display
Perhaps the most photographed natural feature of Echo Park are its magnificent lotus flowers that unfurl their pink and white blooms between April and August. These iconic aquatic plants have graced the lake since the 1920s, however stories vary about how they first arrived.
These beautiful blooms are celebrated each July during the Lotus Festival, a vibrant cultural celebration honoring Asian-Pacific traditions.
The lake teems with wildlife, particularly waterfowl that have grown quite comfortable around humans. Ducks, geese, and coots paddle about with confidence, while turtles can be spotted gliding through the water or basking along the shoreline.

Beyond Beauty
While Echo Park is visually appealing, it also plays a practical role in the city's infrastructure. The lake functions as a detention basin within Los Angeles' storm drain system - combining beauty with utility.

Cultural Cornerstone
The park's significance extends beyond its natural features. In the early 1900s, this area neighbored the Edendale district, a central hub of early Hollywood filmmaking where several pioneering studios set up shop.
Today, Echo Park connects Los Angeles' past and present. It offers a contrast to the surrounding urban landscape and provides views of the downtown skyline - especially notable at sunset when light reflects across both water and buildings.
