About Mary Grogan Community Park
The Story Behind the Park
Tucked away next to Enoch's High School in Modesto, California, you'll come across the sprawling 42-acre Mary Grogan Community Park. Opened in July 2013, this green space honors the legacy of Mary Grogan, who dedicated her career to the city's parks before her passing in 2010. As Modesto's longtime parks director, her name now graces this expansive park.
Soccer Heaven
Let's talk about what makes this park special: the soccer complex forms the centerpiece of Mary Grogan. With seven illuminated fields spread across the grounds, soccer enthusiasts have plenty of room to play. Three fields feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf (a blessing during California's dry spells), while the other four offer traditional grass surfaces (though these can be a bit uneven in spots).
What's neat about the setup is how flexible it is - most fields can transform from one large playing area into two smaller youth fields when needed. The lighting system allows for evening games, extending the usable hours well after sunset.
Fair warning: weekends and soccer season bring crowds, with youth leagues, adult competitions, and tournaments keeping the fields busy almost constantly.

Beyond the Fields
Not a soccer fan? No problem. The park features a 1-mile walking and jogging path that loops around the perimeter, with helpful quarter-mile markers to track your progress. This paved trail has become a favorite for morning joggers, afternoon strollers, and people walking their four-legged friends.
Parking is plentiful with both paved and overflow dirt lots, however you might want to arrive early on tournament days when spaces fill quickly.
Exciting news for families: a playground is currently under construction, which should add another dimension to the park's appeal. There are also some picnic tables scattered throughout if you're looking to enjoy a quick outdoor meal.
Practical Matters
When nature calls, you'll find clean restroom facilities with warm running water in the main building area. If you're playing on the back fields, porta-potties are available there instead. During games and tournaments, the snack bar opens up to serve hungry athletes and spectators, but be prepared for a wait during busy periods.
The park maintains a staff presence to keep things running smoothly and facilities clean - something that doesn't go unnoticed by regular visitors.
Using the Fields
While there's typically one community field open for casual pickup games or practice, most of the space requires booking if you're coming with an organized group. If you're hoping to use a field without a reservation, it's worth checking ahead about availability, as scheduled events take priority.
Dogs are welcome to join you (on leash, of course), but remember to clean up after them.
Mary Grogan Community Park offers quality playing fields and open space for Modesto residents. Whether you're there to compete, exercise, or simply enjoy some fresh air, it's a significant addition to the city's recreational options.
