César E. Chávez Park
About César E. Chávez Park
Park Overview
Situated on Sierra Drive in Modesto, California, César E. Chávez Park sits in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood. Right now, this community space is in the midst of a major transformation - it's temporarily closed as it undergoes an exciting makeover through the State of California Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program.
If you're planning to visit, you'll need to wait a bit longer - the park is scheduled to reopen in Summer 2026. The renovation work, which kicked off in 2020, will significantly expand recreational options for locals and visitors.
New Facilities
When completed, César E. Chávez Park will have several new features. Water lovers will enjoy the new aquatic center complete with a pool and splash pad - great for those hot Modesto summers. Skateboarders will have their own skate plaza to practice tricks, while basketball enthusiasts can shoot hoops on a new basketball court. The good news? All these areas will have lighting for evening use.
For a more relaxed experience, the park will offer a new picnic pavilion and a soccer field for friendly matches. Health-conscious visitors can take advantage of approximately 4,250 linear feet of walking paths interspersed with three outdoor fitness stations.
Additional Enhancements
The renovation doesn't stop there. The park will feature a new event stage area for community gatherings, convenient restroom facilities, and secure perimeter fencing. Environmental considerations haven't been overlooked either, with the addition of bioswales and groundwater recharge basins.
Inside the existing Maddux Youth Center, two new multipurpose rooms will accommodate exercise classes and other activities. Within the park, fresh landscaping and upgraded irrigation systems will create a more sustainable and attractive environment. As part of the redesign, the César E. Chávez monument will find a new home within the grounds.
Previous Park Features
Before this renovation, the park was a simpler place with concrete picnic tables and benches, however it lacked covered areas for shade. Kids could play on basic playground equipment, including a tube slide and swing set with wood chip surfacing underfoot.
The Maddux Youth Center has long been an important hub within the park, providing programming and activities that support local young people.
Community Connection
More than just a recreational space, César E. Chávez Park has functioned as a community gathering spot over the years. It's been a place where local organizations conduct outreach efforts, including food distribution events for neighbors in need.
Investment
The $8.5 million renovation represents an investment in creating an inclusive, modern park for diverse community needs. These improvements address maintenance challenges that had affected the park and create an updated space for neighborhood residents.
