About the Location
A Slice of Oakland History
Nestled in West Oakland, de Fremery Park spans 9.5 acres of green space with a rich past. At its heart stands a Victorian mansion built in the 1860s by James de Fremery, a San Francisco banker who knew how to invest in real estate. What once began as a private estate transformed into Oakland's first municipal playground when the city purchased it in 1907.
More Than Just a Park
De Fremery Park has witnessed significant chapters of Oakland's story. During the Great Depression, it became a training ground for Works Progress Administration (WPA) recreation leaders trying to bring some joy during tough times.
During World War II, the United Service Organizations (USO) hosted gatherings here for African American servicemen. Fast forward to the late 1960s, and the park transformed into a crucial meeting spot for the Black Panther Party, who held rallies and provided community services under its shade trees.
What You'll Find Today
Today, the mature trees at de Fremery Park provide welcome relief from urban life. The historic Victorian mansion now is the de Fremery Recreation Center, hosting programs and events that bring neighbors together year-round. There are public restrooms available - always a practical plus.
Get Your Game On
Looking to stay active? The recently renovated tennis courts come with lights for those evening matches. The two basketball courts occasionally transform for community events, including Thursday roller skating nights that bring out locals of all ages.
Skateboarders flock to the popular skate park - known locally as "Town Park" - with its mix of concrete elements and wooden features. Whether you're practicing your first ollie or showing off advanced tricks, there's space for every skill level.
Family-Friendly Features
Got kids in tow? You'll appreciate the two playgrounds - one designed with toddlers in mind and another for the bigger kids, both featuring updated safety padding. Scattered around the grounds are plenty of picnic tables and benches great for lunch breaks or watching the little ones play.
Trash bins are conveniently placed around the park to help keep things tidy. Note that this is a dog-free park, so your four-legged friends will need to stay home for this outing.
A Living Legacy
Many locals know this space as "Lil' Bobby Hutton Memorial Park," named after a young Black Panther Party member killed in 1968. Since 1998, an annual memorial celebration honors his legacy, reinforcing the park's importance in Oakland's cultural fabric.
Through the seasons, de Fremery Park hosts community gatherings that showcase Oakland's diversity.
