About the Location
A Neighborhood Haven
Tucked away at the intersection of Nicol Avenue and Coolidge Avenue in Oakland's School/Bartlett neighborhood, Gwen Jackson Park might be small - about the size of a large corner house - but it packs a lot of heart. Formerly known as Nicol Park, this urban retreat was renamed to honor Gwen Jackson, a dedicated Oakland activist who breathed new life into the space and ran summer art programs for local kids.
What You'll Find
Don't let the compact size fool you - this little park offers quite a bit for visitors. There's a children's playground where the little ones can burn off energy, a water fountain that's thoughtfully designed to accommodate water bottles, and several benches where you can sit back and take a breather.
Feeling hungry? The park features a small barbecue grill, making it a perfect spot for impromptu neighborhood gatherings or family picnics. The well-maintained grounds add to the welcoming atmosphere, inviting you to linger a while longer.
Fresh Face, Same Heart
In February 2025, Gwen Jackson Park got a makeover as part of Oakland's Mini Parks Beautification Project. This $5 million initiative, funded by Caltrans' Clean California local grant program, aimed to revitalize nine mini parks in historically underserved Oakland neighborhoods.
The renovations brought new life to the space with resurfaced play areas, fresh park furniture, and accessible seating options. Safety got an upgrade too, with improved lighting, fencing, and gates to help everyone feel secure while enjoying the park.
You'll also notice the new animal-proof trash receptacles - a practical addition that helps keep the park clean and discourages illegal dumping.
Going Green
The recent renovations weren't just about aesthetics. The park received environmentally conscious upgrades including new landscaping and improved irrigation systems. Newly planted shade trees not only provide cool spots to escape the sun but also help combat the urban heat island effect, creating a more comfortable microclimate within this neighborhood sanctuary.
