About Harrison Square in Oakland

Chinese Garden Park is a small urban park located in Oakland's Chinatown neighborhood, bounded by 7th Street, Harrison Street, 6th Street, and Alice Street. Originally known as Harrison Square when the city was laid out, it was later called Harrison Railroad Park from 1967 until the 1990s.

The park features traditional Chinese architecture and design elements, including a Hall of Pioneers building designed by Henry Chang Jr., a former Oakland City Councilmember and architect. This hall now serves as part of the Lake Merritt Child Care Center, having previously been used as one of two sites for Family Bridges' Hong Lok Senior Center.

Chinese Garden Park is a popular gathering spot for the local community, particularly in the mornings when it becomes a hub for Tai Chi practitioners. The park provides a serene space within the bustling Chinatown area, offering residents and visitors a place for relaxation and cultural activities.

While the park's overall area is limited, with much of the space occupied by buildings or fenced areas, it still maintains its role as a significant community space. The park serves as a venue for cultural and community programs, especially those aimed at younger people.
