About the Location
History and Renaming
Wilma Chan Park is a 1.5-acre public green space located in the heart of Oakland's Chinatown district. The park was renamed in 2022 to honor Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan following her death in 2021.
Formerly known as Madison Square Park, its history is intertwined with the development of Oakland's Chinatown. In the 1960s, the park was relocated from its original site to make way for the construction of BART headquarters. This relocation was part of broader urban renewal projects that impacted the Chinatown area at the time.
